LibreOffice is pretty reliable and versatile and has always been compatible for office documents for me.

Have you tried Textedit? (apple), it will be in the applications section. A very plain text editor is going to be best for html.

Installed on every mac in Applications, not in the MAS :)
Search Spotlight for Textedit (easier way to find it)

Yep i have just spotted it, gotta admit owning a mac is doing my head in but like most things /// practice is perfection so i'll get there , cheers

I got use to it after a few months and now using windows is very confusing (others will disagree).

If you want something more powerful than just Textedit have a look at Coda - http://panic.com/coda/

Brave man. Not sure myself if I could do that. Been an MS guy since dos 3.1 or something like that.
Always feel lost in front of my friend's macs.

i'm PC, but MAC conversion is EASY.

if it was on the left its now on the right, if it was on the right its now on the left.

if it was at the top its now at the bottom

if it was called "file manager" its now called " some funky San Francisco code word for .........file"

easy, also stop buying beer because almost everything you want is no longer FREE.

mac osx is easy to use and a lot more powerful because of the underlying unix code. Being a former PC user, osx is far superior to windows, which just gets worse every time a new version is released and MS charge you hundreds of dollars for the 'privilege'.

As for MS Office, as a power user, the same bugs in the 1997 version of MS Office are still there today, they just change the box and the tool bar and release a "new" version almost every year - and everyone just keeps buying it. Great business model!

just my 5 cents worth

I recently got a new laptop with win8 on it for Helena, she HATES it, that was back in june and she won't use the thing !! but she has to move to it soon for various logistical reasons.

myself, I am on vista and two 8 year old XP's and they all "talk" to each other nicely/mostly.

i'm also still running MS office 2003 and VERY happy. I use a little dreamweaver 2004, adobe suite cs2, free filezilla for ftp, and keep my browsers and wordpress up to date .

I agree if you had to update all the time it would be a waste, everything I have is "stable" and I can't see myself having to change/upgrade for years and possibly by then I will be in the mood to move to a google docs type setup?

who knows whats around the corner?
