Youth Challenge - overview

Two of our newer members are ScottNugent and Sp@rky13.

Both are High School students – and both love “domain names” and all that goes with them. I've spent a bit
of time Skyping with them.

But neither have their own Aussie domains. So they haven't had the opportunity to fully practise all the skills
they have acquired on a .com.au domain.

They both acknowledge that they have much to learn as well – particularly when it comes to monetizing sites, SEO etc.

So, given that I am a great believer in youth, I've spoken with both of them and come up with “The Youth Challenge”!

They are excited and raring to go!

__________________________________________

These are the details:

• I am going to give them one domain name each from my portfolio to develop.

• If they need hosting, I will also give it to them.

• They will start developing their sites; and each week they will post an update of their progress to this thread.

• They will develop fully monetised sites with AdSense and affiliate advertising. These will be their own accounts, so whatever they earn is theirs to keep.

• They have a maximum of 3 months to develop the sites.

• If they have developed the site in this time period, I will transfer ownership to them. Domain will be free – all they have to pay is the COR (about $40).

• Obviously after the 3 months, they can sell the domain if they wish to.

The reason I want them to post their updates every week is so that other members can give them constructive comments, hints, tips and tricks.

In other words, this is “University”, and we are their tutors! (Though I’m sure they can teach us a few tricks as well!).

Your support of these young guys would be truly appreciated!

Good luck Sparky and Scott!

Good one Don. If it's not fart jokes, it's something else. :D

The boys will be posting the domains they have chosen. Not top drawer domains, but good enough to practise on and make a few bucks.

Good work, I train a few people at work in SEO and Social it is hard work at times but worth it then they see results from their hard work and on going training.

Great idea Ned. If can be of any SEO/SEM help, please let me know.

I recently began working with a student at our local university on a similar exercise of sharing with the next generation, except it involves my sites and I am paying him.

Great concept Ned and I applaud your generosity. On a similar track, over the last few weeks one of my friends has started to ask me a lot more about domains and whether I can help her build a portfolio. It's exciting going back and seeing the industry through fresh eyes again. She's just completed her first domain acquisition, nothing major, starting off slow, but I have to admit I'm pretty stoked with the domain she found and the price she got it for. She comes from a web design/usability background, so will hopefully put those skills to use with her purchases.

Since then two of my other mates want in on these domain shenanigans!

All the best with your project ScottNugent and Sp@rky13, look forward to reading the updates!

That is great Mike.
Are they getting into .au domains or .com?
I tried to get some of my tech minded mates into domaining, but couldn't. Oh well, guess that means less competition for me. :)

At the moment just .com. But I've given them enough info about .au to pursue it if they want to.

Update - Youth Challenge

Just wanted to give an update from my perspective (as the 3 months is nearly up).

SnowDeals.com.au - Sp@rky13

I think it is fair to say that young Sparky has a little way to go to meet the challenge. I'm not criticizing or being judgemental - just telling it as it is.

However, it is nothing that a few solid hours wouldn't fix! C'mon young fella! There's still time. ;)

ComputerLessons.com.au - ScottNugent

After letting things stagnate for a while, Scott has well and truly taken up the challenge in recent times. He has done a great job with his site, and he has involved the DNT community.

So I'm really impressed, and have told Scott that the domain is his to keep. We'll be doing the COR next week.

Congratulations and well done mate!

Thanks so much! An awesome challenge and opportunity for me, and I've learned HEAPS! Can't thank the community (especially neddy ) enough!

I look forward to seeing Sparky continue with his site! :D

Trials are now finished, (last week). Worked the whole week (literally) on doing my major for software that I turned in yesterday. Now I have some time to get cracking :) And Ned, you are definitely in your right to criticize me :) Scott has done an awesome job and I haven't. We'll see what I can get done in the next few days :p

Andrew Wright from Drop has very kindly agreed to do a COR with 2 years new registration for a discounted price of $35 (normally $49.95).

Thanks Drop!
