Clarification of clientUpdateProhibited for .au domains

Can someone please clarify what the domain status "clientUpdateProhibited" means exactly in relation to .au domains?

I've had a quick search and also checked auDA site but can't easily find the information.

I think "client" is referring to the registrar. So the registrar cannot make changes to the record. It has to be unlocked before it can be altered.

I've not yet figured out why some registrars do this to their domains. On occasion I bump into a domain like this and I have to go to the registry website and unlock it. It looks like both Godaddy and Tucows do this to their domains.

Thanks Anthony. auDA referred me to the RFC, which basically says it's a status the registrar can put in place - it prevents updates and that's it. It can be applied or removed at any time.

All I really wanted to check was what it meant for the domain in terms of expiration/dropping/deletion etc - the answer is nothing :) It's just another valid status for an actively registered name.

i've been told by a few registras that it meant it had expired and it could only be renewed with them and not transfered.

Joel,

You are correct it means nothing in terms of expiration/dropping/deletion.

Tim,
You are probably talking about a different status I think you are referring to serverUpdateProhibited which shows an expired domain but it is different from clientUpdateProhibited.

On the subject of serverUpdateProhibited those registrars are misleading you.
