Verisign is now running ads aimed at the UK, on UK public transport, on spotify, and no doubt other places, (not sure about TV). I suspect they see the weakened state of the namespace as an opportunity.

A recent advert we heard on Spotify prompted howls of laughter at Engage Web, followed by sombre reflection. This quickly turned to anger as the reality of what we had just heard set in.

The truth of the situation is in this statement,

If you’re a UK-based business then a .co.uk is just as good, if not better.

This is the kind of thing the Brits say about Jaguar and Reebok.

For a long time I have though Verisign could easily boost market share here with advertising, things are wide open with all the mismanagement of .com.au and it wouldn't be a hard to convince people with the .au rollout coming up, especially when domain owners start getting letters from Auda about protecting their brand. So far .com has grown organically here with no real advertising spend at all.

Do you think Verisign should be running ads here & could .com become Australia's defacto cctld?

Well they can try but I think companies that wanted the .com grabbed them years ago. I am still seeing plenty of .com's being used lately. I don't think anyone existing company will jump ship other than to do a redirect back to .com.au

Of course if they are aiming for the world ....... .com all the way!

Suspect they'll mainly be marketing to new businesses. This could work very well in Australia with all the red tape around registrations.

Interesting to hear on Triple M this morning Eddie refer to Jetstar as Jetstar/com/au and then go "oh hang on it's Jetstar/Com" which redirects to a backslash au

They did used to use the .com.au then switched to the .com only at some point. It probably makes a lot of sense to move away from country codes from a content duplication standpoint (and simplicity as well).

Why operate 10 different sites when you can have one and use that single, global URL in every market?
