Chief Executive of NZRS (.nz) Mr Jay Daley has gone on the defence regarding the growing claims that .NZ direct registrations have been a failure and done damage to the New Zealand cctld.

His chart (below) is very interesting because the direct registration proposal in NZ started in late 2012 and as we can see that is when growth dramatically fell according to Jim’s chart,

See the NZ DNC's press releases about direct registrations and note the dates,

This looks to be the key one here,

I have invited Jay Daley to come to Dntrade to discuss .NZ direct registrations.

It would be good if he could provide Stats on the ratio of ownership that makes up those .nz numbers - what is the ratio of .co.nz registrants that also registered the .nz extension, and out of those (.co.nz registrants) how many abandoned one or the other extension at renewal. I would guess approx. 3 to 5% are new registrants. Therefore, the actual growth rate is very low even though the data can look like the extension is growing.

Yes would be good to know.

They did have some data on registrations in .nz but not in .co.nz. I think it was something like 27% from memory.

Agree on this being a factor though what I wonder about is the extent of the fall, e.g. from 10% (which was steady over several years), then down to 2% in about 9 months. I think this is larger fall than any other tlds. (.com.au is just a steady slide downwards from 2007 by comparison-.com.au attached).

Then they have got the launch year of .nz where they had high growth over the year as would be expected. Then back to 2% and a rise to 4%.

I suspect the recent increase to 4% growth is possibly related to extra registrations due to the March .nz deadline (and later name release?) and could be temporary.

I see today New Zealand's best domain sex.co.nz, just sold for $19,320 USD, not exactly vote of confidence for that market.

Out of interest the highest price paid for the .nz extension is $3121 for badoo.nz according to namebio.com
Hang on, when Namebio report 365/tv as a sale you don't believe it ,but now you are quoting them for .nz .. ummm

I don't think it sold in the auction as I was watching this drop. I think Garth Piesse used his extraordinary drop catching team to grab this one as it dropped without paying a penny more than registration fee I believe. He grabs all of the best nz domains as they drop. I'm pretty sure he grabbed mail.co.nz recently exactly the same way.

They like Nominet cannot admit their failures.. Now it is cover up time. The problem is they said it themselves on the record!

"NZ fact the .nz has failed and is not "remarkably successful" as claimed. Their .nz take up was and remains majority only of the .co.nz defence registrations.. They do not care.. they still make the money $$ but how about those who have to pay the "double tax"... Don't think for a minute they do not calculate into their own future budgets how much they think they can make from people with good existing names who may be forced into defensive registrations of another.

https://www.dnc.org.nz/sites/default/files/2016-08/Domain Name Commission - Annual Report - .pdf

"Figure 3 shows the total number of domain names increased from 640,342 (at 1 April 2015) to 656,607 (at 31 March 2016) – a growth of 16,265, or 2.5 percent. The dip between February and March 2016 reflects the one-year anniversary of the end of the preferential registration and registration period - an important part of the registrations direct at the second level change. It appears that some registrants, having exercised their preferential registration rights, have subsequently let the shorter version of their name drop. "

Direct AU Registrations, A New Australian Internet Tax

ACCAN claimed, in a statement, that Australia’s current domain name system is highly regarded and has strong public recognition and the proposed changes could have adverse effects on small businesses that rely on their website and domain name to attract business if other parties register and use similar domain names.

It could also result in additional expenses incurred by small businesses that have to defensively register additional domain names to protect their businesses, it added.

ACCAN CEO, Teresa Corbin, indicated the changes may be confusing to consumers as recognised domain names of businesses and organisations could change."
