Hi Guys,
Are 2 and 3 letter AU domain names worth much these days?
Any thoughts and ideas around these domain names would be appreciated.
I guess they are short and very easy to remember, but since they are not generic terms, Id have no idea how to sell them.
What do you think?

In short, yes!

There was a recent article on domainer.com.au about 3 letter domains.

2 and 3 letter domains are popular, because they can represent business names as acronyms, which is particularly useful for businesses with long names.

For investment purposes, some letters / combinations of letters are better than others, for example zxq.com.au wouldn't be one to buy ;)

In .com yes, our market is a bit harder, works for some though (2L have built in value) walked past a building site and there was an address of 1184.com.au ....... so you just never know

Yes LLL domains are valuable, but LL domains can be worth a lot more (because there are much less of them). We use an LL for our business, it is short sharp and easy to remember

Nice article .. thanks .. this is good .. looks like some 3 letter domains have come up with some good $$ too.
Maybe I should get some of the ones I have appraised here at DNT.
Thanks again for the read.

cool .. i acquired quite a few of these domains over the last few years, but I have no idea where to start selling them. I always thought that because of the randomness of available 3 letter domains it was hard to find a market for them, despite how short and brandable the domains are, but looks like I was wrong.

So the LL's are even better, great, I got a few of those too, but some are also LL and .net.au .. so perhaps not those ones so much. btw .. nice domain TM :)

Lots of lll.com.au are available, as a general rule they are not valuable. It is a limited number that are worth something, the combinations with a large number of potential buyers, i.e. very common company acronyms, those which are a common word etc. The market is nothing like the .com market, completely different dynamics.

Even the higher quality combinations that went years ago are typically barely worth $100 so beware about owning a lot of these as the holding costs will bite.

Doubt they paid anything for it.

Here is the most recent sales according to namebio, as you can see the top quality lll.com.au are around low $100 on the drops, these are commonly also pronounceable., e.g. sip.com.au $124, mav.com.au $141. You can also see some private sales around $1000. In my view buying a name for $124 with an enduser price around $1000 is going to result in a substantial loss to the domain holder over time. There isn't enough of a margin in it considering renewal fees and the % which are likely to sell each year.

Here is the most recent sales according to..................
i think its no so much the domain name no matter what it is, as in all cases i find its the potential buyer SEEING the value in it, and thats up to the owner to sell the potential IMO.
to many people basically sit on their bums and don't make sales calls, and then complain that domaining sucks, there's heaps of different ways to do domaining, you just have to find the way you want to do it and then live with the results good or bad.

I don't think so. I've need met anyone who has done well from domaining by trying to find buyers.

If the name is good quality it will get inquiries, and those people will be far more motivated than buyers who are contacted by the domain owner. It is incredibly hard to find domains that buyers will want which is why few people last, that is why many say domaining sucks, because there is no demand for the names they bought, or the demand is not high enough to be profitable on the basis of a whole portfolio.

It isn't simply a matter of picking up the phone, at that point it becomes a low paying job selling domains for low amounts, rather than an investment. Most people will get sick of a low paying job after a while.

Can we purchase any .com.au as AUDA policies states about prohibition of purchasing for resale.
Hi Rohit
Is your purpose in purchasing a domain 4 monetization or reselling?
If the former, then reselling immediately appears 2 b within policy, according to me

As more of an end-user I don't see the value in these abbreviated names unless the business, service, mark or place etc. is commonly known by the abbreviation like LA or TM or you have a ridiculously long name to abbreviate that someone can't be bothered typing into a browser. Unlike a short word or the examples above, no one is going to type abbreviations into google hoping to find what they are looking for so you still need to do a lot of SEO and advertising to promote the abbreviation. Why bother spending a premium to buy one. It seems like more of a sales pitch to me.

i disagree, if you have an established name and a current marketing budget/strategy then a LLL fits in nicely especially for 3 letters as 2 word domains are easy to remember anyway " dubbo dentist "

i don't think google is the topic here, its about making it easier for people to remember your web address

its VERY common in all speech to abbreviate so you just fit in, AFL, NRL, ALP, MCG yes all big budget names but it works any business, "Sandringham Yacht Club" www.syc.com.au is a great example , a long name always shortened by members to syc and there it is.
and damn lucky sydney didn't get it first !!!!!
so a few grand for that is very worthwhile IMO
