I dare say WHMCS is the front-end solution of choice.

From the bit I have looked at this it would seem with a HostGator Aluminum re seller account + WHM + WHMCS you basically got a hosting business.
i use the policy: if its my issue its free, if its your issue i send an invoice

Do you ever register a domain for a client?
.
you will have COR issues and it will cost you BIG time in the end.

A likely scenario you will have to deal with is hacked sites and recovery from recent backup. The client will then ask questions about how secure your hosting is.

Have decided for now the entirety of doing it (re selleraccount, enom reseller account, WHM, WHMCS and then integrating all that into a WHMCS theme like www.zomex.com/templates/whmcs/ is more than I want to take on.
I think before taking on such a development project you need to work out where your hosting clients are coming from. If you're just starting out in hosting you probably need an established client base to market to from either domain sales or web design. Otherwise, it's going to be hard to penetrate the hosting market from scratch.
It has also been indicated to me that if web hosting / developing for clients the provider should have Business Insurance?
Something that protects the customer in case something weird happens like their email system getting messed up for a period of time.
