Websites hosting for clients and customers

From the bit I have looked at this it would seem with a HostGator Aluminum re seller account + WHM + WHMCS you basically got a hosting business.

Sorta like the idea of HostGator Aluminum re seller account + WHM + WHMCS + theme and offering hosting with web services as a business idea.

How tedious admin / support wise is offering hosting to a client? Like to begin with I don't even think I would WHMCS. Too much software for very few customers in my opinion.

Domain management would be a pain I bet.

i don't use whmcs, i use quickbooks as i only host for clients and don't want to get into hosting in general.....yet.

most of my clients never ring me, but as an example they always ring me when they buy a new computer as they didn't file their email settings !

hostgator doesn't go down very often but when it does is 2am USA time which is @ lunch time here but my clients know not to ring me as my websites are on the same servers.

maybe 15mins mostly, rarely 1 hour and maybe only ever 3-4months so i can handle that.

i use the policy: if its my issue itss free, if its your issue i send an invoice

Trying to figure out the likely possible scenarios for your issue / my issue. Do you ever register a domain for a client?

Think if so it's a bit of a game changer. Like more trouble than it is worth. So rather just charge them for when things break. i.e. is a clients site gets hacked and you have auto back up you charge them to re install the previous site before it broke.

A likely scenario you will have to deal with is hacked sites and recovery from recent backup. The client will then ask questions about how secure your hosting is.

you will have COR issues and it will cost you BIG time in the end.

Trying to figure this out at the moment....

Do most of your customers have their domain registered to themselves and you nameserver it over for development?

It is possible to COR a name over to VentraIP for most .au extensions for free. Takes about a week to go through after inserting EPP code from previous host.

Kind Regards,
Alex

i make this statement to all clients " all websites can be hacked because things change constantly, bored people in foreign countries trying to make money, i do my best to ensure the security of the website.

but there are no gaurantees, just like driving a mercedes and expecting to never have an accident, in a mercedes you should survive but they don't gaurantee it either.

ANYONE that tells you different is lying to you. "

you need to be a reseller of domain names others you will have COR issues and it will cost you BIG time in the end.

tim

Are you a re seller of domain names? Meaning do you have a enom re seller account? Or something comparable?

Have decided for now the entirety of doing it (re selleraccount, enom reseller account, WHM, WHMCS and then integrating all that into a WHMCS theme like www.zomex.com/templates/whmcs/ is more than I want to take on.

Like I got an idea how to do it (and it sounds cool) but have decided for now to work my way into it. Already am developing two sites and until they are up am not looking to take on something I don't fully understand.

Am taking advantage of the VentrIP first birthday and getting a WHM Multi hosting plan -> For the entire month of July 2013, you can take 55% off any new Economy, Business or WHM Multi web hosting service! Simply use coupon code BDAY55 when placing your order.

+ buying Genesis Framework and a child theme to play with.

I think before taking on such a development project you need to work out where your hosting clients are coming from. If you're just starting out in hosting you probably need an established client base to market to from either domain sales or web design. Otherwise, it's going to be hard to penetrate the hosting market from scratch.

Agree... Can be done for a few select clients relatively easy tho. If serious about moving towards it tho good to get an idea of how much is involved.

Thank you both for the info. The next month is a big move for me the - learning curve / development / hosting wise.

I feel like I know enough to make good decisions.

Thank you,

Just to add to this my research has indicated HostGator with enom is probably not the most preferably way to go about host resale in Australia.

After reading this + cmments -> http://support.hostgator.com/articl.../how-do-i-get-my-enom-domain-reseller-account

And then checking this -> https://support.hostgator.com/artic...omain-names-can-hostgator-register-tld-prices

It does not seem .com.au / net.au / org.au are covered in the free eNom account that comes with HostGator reseller accounts.

I think then you would have to sign up for a enom membership -> http://www.enom.com/resellers/benefits-pricingplans.aspx and the cheapest option is paying $195.00 allowing sales of domains for $ 12.95

Anyone ever use -> http://www.tppwholesale.com.au/ I think it is more geared to Australia or just wait for http://www.ventraipwholesale.com.au/ to start offering hosting.

A bit sick of looking at hosting at the moment. :)

It has also been indicated to me that if web hosting / developing for clients the provider should have Business Insurance?

Something that protects the customer in case something weird happens like their email system getting messed up for a period of time.

how would an insurance policy or even money from it protect them? they don't want money they want the emails not bouncing off a dead site.

i think it would be difficult insurance to get and difficult to claim. maybe you as the insurance holder could claim your time and lost income because you had to stop everything and fix the issue

if you are dealing with someone like ventraip then that is a question to ask them especially when most hosts state 99.9% ( or similar) uptime.

i think your money would be better spent writing good terms and conditions that reflect you are a reseller and have limited liability and push the responsibility towards your reseller hosting provider just like all these car/life/health insurance sites do ( speaking in general terms)

most people do not read t&c anyway so i wrote the document for you.

"i'm a reseller, i take no responsibilty if your site goes down but i'll make a phone call for you so the other guy can try to fix it."
