based on another thread: https://www.dntrade.com.au/domain-news/7309-first-domain-ever-registered-turns-28-a.html

i'd love to know WHEN everyone registered their first domain, and if you are bold .........what was its name.

for me it was goldbaby dot com au which i still own, but it was my girlfriends idea at the time, it was my first dip into ecommerce, it was built in .ASP and never got off the ground as we broke up, no big deal, we are still friends.

i think the year was @ 1998/9

yes i was a late starter.

2001 - lethalmedia.net

My first .com.au was maybe 12 months later.

Hand rego and then was offered $5k for it 2 days later. I just happened to snag a dropped generic domain a large company had let slip. Didn't sell it to them and then was threatened with all kinds of legal action, even nasty threatening letters the night before Christmas.

It is in good hands now.

I registered heaps of crap around 1998/99 which I let lapse in the following few years.

One of the first I can recall is 4AGZE.com which I would have registered around 1999. Unfortunately I let it lapse too, and I replaced it with 4AGE.net in May 2002.

I still own 4AGE.net and it is my longest continuously owned domain.

Not that much was registered before about 1994 & I would say the first thoughts of speculation started around 94-95. So you've got 10 years of nothing happening in terms of speculation. This is one major reason why new tlds of today are never likely to work, they don't have 10 years of domainer free time to get established.

Things really exploded between 1998-2000 so not much of a surprise that this is when the stories tend to start.

remember the bubble burst like it was yesterday!!

registered isw.net.au in 1996 for a company I was working for at the time.

workingsoftware.com.au in 1997 for my first company.

'97-99 was the year I registered a ton of other names like girl.com.au, female.com.au, airfares.com.au, jokes.com.au, phonebook.com.au etc when you had to have a business name associated with the name. Remember seeing the usual suspects down at the business reg. office every day/week.

yep, i was there ! just didn't see the value of the expense at the time, BUGGER.

got a nice one for a client www.bunyips.com.au for his camping store, reg'd in 2001 and finally got a website in 2012.

he asked me to not renew it in 2007 and i refused and told him to send me a cheque, he thanks me now.

i ended up not doing the dev on the site as i moved to melbourne, still i think he should have used me ( ego )

Think it was something silly like advertisingview.com in 2003-4 (actually sold the site off in 2008-9 as it was making money based on reviews of advertising agencies and also was selling some SEO services lol)

But in 2004 I know I picked up a few more like profilepimp.com/net and then sold that off too.

Now I own like 140 domains and trying to sell off about 40 atm as I want to cut down the domains I own to under 50.

My first domain was auctionoz.com which I registered circa 1994

I actually started building an online auction site for it a long time before ebay existed and then for reasons I can't remember I let the project go before launching it. Shit happens.

I also remember earlier in the 90's that giftvoucher.com was available! .com's were $100.00 per year back then but I was living hand to mouth and couldn't afford it!

I am sure it would be worth quite a bit more today. The one that go away... "I could have been a contender!"

.com's was where I started, in 1996 regged one, then half a dozen in 1997, then two companies in the USA bought two from me in 1998 in quick succession (I didnt want to sell so they offered higher, the best was USD$5k which was AUD$7.5k back then) and suddenly it clicked I should register a few more... that's when I wrote my slow but effective "re-reg the dropped domain robots" (a few VBA browser automation bots hooked up to the same database) and regged 1200 over the next 3 years until my robots could not compete any more. My oldest domain is regged 1995 but it wasn't by me originally, bought it on aftermarket. Got my first .com.au in 2002 or 2004 or something like that... Back in 1997 I did a full automated availability sweep of all the LLL.com's currently un-regged and there were sooo many thousands still available. So I registered... just one! ;)
