Saw this article in The Age about how DJ's is trying yet again to come up with a competitive online model. (They've tried a couple of times previously - and failed miserably).

The quote below shows their intent - 90,000 product lines when they relaunch next week.

DJ's boss is Paul Zahra.

But the Melbourne-born Zahra, whose family emigrated to Australia from Malta, knows he can't control the macro-economy and is focused on the massive job at hand. On November 6 he will see a key plank of his restructuring and rejuvenation plans for the 174-year-old retailer spring to life when David Jones launches its new website.

"We will be the oldest newest thing on the internet," Zahra jokes.

The relaunched David Jones website will feature 90,000 product lines for online purchase, up from the 9000 available on the old site, and this will help change the way people shop, especially men, says Zahra.

Will be interesting to see if they have managed to work it out this time.

Surely they have taken an in depth look at other full price, big range online retailers like The Iconic and learnt a thing or two

This reminds me of Harvey Norman, at my work place, we spoke about how Harvey Norman's online marketing budget is HUGE, but their actions are limited, at the end of the day they dont want their online business to kill all their bricks and mortar shops!!

A step in the right direction, but is it simply too late? Gut feeling is it probably won't get traction.

Lucky for them Australian consumers are pretty slow as well... and it will be quite awhile before online retail growth phase is over.

So if they get their sh*t together there is still time to win some market share, get some scale and not go the way of the dodo.

Well they seem to be up and running - just got an email from them offering competitions / prizes and free delivery.

I imagine they have a good base email list which would have been gleaned in part from David Jones Card members.
