Why net.au may prove to be a wise investment

In our portfolio of 2,500 name, we only have a few hundred net.au. I think I've probably undevalued them over the years. Certainly based on some pretty solid sales that have happened over the years.

However here's a thought that may make net.au investors even happier.

There's a real push at the moment for registrations to be opened up directly under .au

If this happens, based on exeprience overseas, at some stage (it could take a few years, could take 10 years+) you would expect .au to become the favoured and most valuable of the three options.

So grabbing .au domains in a 'landrush' could be very lucrative.

Normally with releases like these there are several stages. First stage might check TM holders. Second stage could well give the option to the equivalent com.au and/or net.au holder.

So for example, before releasing example.au to the general public, the holders of example.net.au and example.com.au might get first dibs with an auction between the two parties if both respond favourably.

What do you think?

Would love first stage to be given to .com.au and .net.au holders - but mainly only cos it suits me :D

there is no reason to add another extension to Australia. There are over 10,000 names for sale at netfleet.com.au alone and tens of thousands of generic .net.au's still available.

The only people who want to see a new extension are auda ( who makes money for every registration) and the registrars.

Im sure companies like seek.com.au , rsvp.com.au , jobs.com.au, realestate.com.au would not want to see seek.au, rsvp.au, jobs.au, realestate.au all suddenly available for them to be basically blackmailed into bidding to make sure they got the new extension

If I was an investor I would go to netfleet and buy the best name I could get now.. I would not be thining about waiting for ten years until .au which wil probably never happen as there is no need for it etc.

Just my opinion :).. dont shoot the messenger

Also I wouldnt bother with .net.au's personally. Yes there are so many still available.... this should slow people down in thinking they are valuable or ever wil be.

There will never be a .au extension. Too many major companies have invested in .com.au now.. they wont be blackmailed to have to buy .au just to keep their .com.au safe etc.

I actually really dislike the sound of just .au on it's own, to me it feels less... professional maybe?

just .au would sound rubbish, would be like .NU domains or something...complete waste of money..

Yes I hope .au never become available. For one it sounds crappy and 2 it would flood an already illiquid market.

Surely that is reason enough given Auda are in control of things?

Agree, it is a very poor choice in my view.

I wrote this in another post but it got lost and it has merit in this post too so here goes:

.net.au argument huh...

I used to be a hater, now I would recommend you all change your opinion and start to consider .net.au as almost worthy...

A couple of examples:

WebDesigners.net.au #1 for Web Designers
See: http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=e...=&oq=&gs_rfai=

Life Insurance (super competitive) #3 for Life Insurance
See: http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=e...=&oq=&gs_rfai=

Whilst you could argue that if the same amount of SEO was done on a non generic .com.au would it rank as well? That's the unknown.

What these two sites above prove is that .net.au CAN rank for SUPER competitive terms.

I would never use .net.au for a main business site or something that I wanted to build a brand around, but for sites relying on search engine traffic I reckon they're fine.

I am far too biased to comment because I have several lovely generic single word product names in the .net.au for sale at ridiculously low prices

I like 'em. Found about 300 generics available 6 months ago that I didn't register. It can't be argued that having a .com.au and a .net.au isn't a massive benefit for SEO.

This thread wasn't really about the current value in net.au but more about if rego's under .au came about, would the net.au be a great way to get a shot at the .au equivalent?

It is just speculation really that they would allocate in that fashion, has any other country code given a benefit to .net.** holders?

Yes it is.

auDA have always said that there is no hierarchy whatsoever between net.au and com.au though.

I'm not saying the net.au would have a preference over the com.au. Just that there would be a reasonable chance that many domains would be uncontested. Ther com.au holder might not understand why having another domain would be important or, if they are interested, undervalue the value of the domain.

Just wondering where you are seeing the real push coming from for opening up .au?

And given you have quite a large portfolio how do you feel opening up .au will affect your existing portfolio vs. opportunities in opening up .au?
