many of the domainers on the forums are bagging it big time, the world is changing, the internet is young and expanding, idn's and gtld's are part of this expansion.

Some folk just don't like change. I think the idea of going to somewhere that openly displays what it does is a good idea

Maybe oneday i will get wtv/xxx up and running ......internet television for adults

I think .xxx will work if it stays in the adult industry, but I know personally if I see creditcard.xxx or insurance.xxx ranking in Google there is very little chance I will be clicking it.

i just bought a .xxx 2 days ago and it won't be an adult site but i see value in it, my reason is i have gained a valuable name that was previously all taken by .com etcccc , the site is an entertainment site/gig guide (pubs, club, restaurants) and i see that the .xxx makes a powerful "top of mind" response ( sorry can't tell you the domain but heres a fake one so you get the idea. www.goldcoast.xxx ) [wishi owned that one !!! ]

my thinking is most people nolonger say www when mentioning a domain name, most people EXPECT a business in oz to have the .com.au so that is also not getting mentioned more and more.

So the .xxx triggers a response.... whatever that may be? porn or fun ?

so using goldcoast as the example, when advertising you have achieved a memorable domain name that doesn't say " goldcoasthookers" and the added .xxx just prompts the viewer to ask themselve " i wonder what thats about? "

OF course you need the right combination of name to go with the .xxx but my point is (and i agree insurance.xxx might not be a good one) don't disregard how powerful .xxx could be used in the right situation.

Just to let you know my site will be online by easter ( other projects first) the name cost me $124 for 2 years, hosting $55 p/a and construction is less then 1K , my projection for this is it will gross @ $62,000 in its second year (i'm not worrying about the first year as thats all about feeding back the money to create the brand ) SO, i think thats a good profit margin and i bought the domain 2 days ago AFTER every body else in the world had a chance to do it before me.

    "its real estate "

Whilst i wish you luck ....... that's a big call on your gross

Where did you get the name from for $124 for 2 years i wonder ?

I did also look up goldcoast only to see it gone, interested to see what it ends up as

I am surprised they registered that many, but the thing is brands worry about this type of thing numerous large brands I work on have been asking about this TLD. I think it could work in the adult industry if you have the right campaign.

lurker: read the article and it seems typical of what i have read elsewhere, having worked in media i think that was written by some junior that was told to create 400 words in the next 30minutes as its plagiarised for a dozen articles i have read. My understanding is that anyone with a trademark didn't ahve to pay for the domain name and could have it removed from ever being registered. go to bradpitt..xxx and you can see it has been removed from rego.

yes mostly its scare tactics, i own my kids .com, .com.au, facebook fancyname and twitter names but i'm not going to go get the .xxx . you have to stop somewhere !

    but to each their own.

Spacey: heres my conservative numbers for you, as i have done this before.

    $62,000 / 365 days / 12 pubs = $14.15 a day ( 2 pints of beer )

The town has a population of 45,000 people, 75% men, average income $120,000+ p/a, 100,000 tourists a year.

the town has 25 pubs, 10 restaurants, 5 clubs and everyday is friday ...for someone !

NOW, do you think $14.15 a day for a pub is worth being listed on my directory? because its not the $14.15 you make ...... its the potential of the $100+++ you loose.

    guess the town?

For real? Maybe for sites like Seek and News, but there would be very few business owners who would give out their website address without the extension on the end.

Do you really think all of these pubs are going to want to advertise on a xxx website? Maybe they will, but I'd be surprised.

Imagine if the extension was .XXXX

Then you'd have lots of pubs signing up. :D

the site is .xxx , you will notice i have only done the numbers on HALF the pubs signing up, single male population is well above normal, disposable income is high.

need i say its a mining town !

this is what i was saying first up, .xxx has given everyone a chance to find another gap to fill

I am unsure if the sales pitch 'they are all doing it' in a smallish town will work

I do think plubs that have things like friday strippers and even bogan bingo plus other 'aussie bloke' stuff will be a good a chance.

I do worry the price per day may be a bit high ??

As a .xxx holder i do wish you success but think you are working it all out at the maximum rather than the minimum which leaves a lot of room for the downside.

I did try for most of the capitol cities which of course were gone so there are people who do think there is a future for this extension, most certainly in the directory style website.

I think the extension will capture some interest and imagination so it's a good starting point to grow from

The crazy domains price is the cheapest i have heard of so far

Well in this game everything is a calculated gamble, thats why I like to have a VERY low break even point or i just don't start it,

"everyones doing it " can work , as i said earlier " its not what you make , its what trade the pub could loose.... " but another one is "yes everyones listed but i only have 3 featured spots " , i have a site that makes $4000 p/a from just 1 (350px by 200px) position, i offer it up in 6 month slots, its a rotating advert using OpenX and there are 10 $200 adverts, i then email my directory clients using a template in Interspire email marketer and they book out with 5 hours each time. thats just a little cream ontop of what the directory already makes.

SO, low break even for me, easy ROI for client, win win

should i start another thread on the subject below?

Has anyone successfully got a .xxx working yet? like just a index file?

i've followed all the instructions at ICM and i have a "token" but my host says someone will actully call me !!!! , not the automated pin but actaully call me !!!

this sounds like BS to me, i created the ICM account, but my domain isn't listed in my acount and i can't find how to add it.

any ideas? I can get to cpanel so its delegated just not resolving.

god, now i sound like a newbie !

With all due respect, you should at least type the authors name into Google before making such unfounded comments.

"Lance Ulanoff is editor in chief of Mashable, where he oversees day-to-day editorial operations. Lance is based in Mashable’s NY editorial headquarters.

A 25-year industry veteran and award-winning journalist, Lance Ulanoff has covered technology since PCs were the size of suitcases, “on line” meant “waiting” and CPU speeds were measured in single-digit megahertz."
