i wonder if anyone is considering the low population when buying up these names, to me there are only about a hundred keyword domains worth the trouble , of course just my opinion

as the old saying goes, last one out "turn the light off"

Does that mean that Australia with 5 x the population only has about 5 hundredm keyword domains worth the trouble ;)

Just picked up my 1st .nz using the drop services. :)

Uncontested lol, so not as great a "Win" as could have been.

found some more... nevermind.

Another one is https://www.discountdomains.co.nz/ - decent, but in general Expired.co.nz ruled the roost. A fourth one is http://domainrecover.co.uk/ but they are old school Snapnames style - fixed price, once you have the 'claim' on the domain, no one else can go for it. Their success is pretty low, but they've snagged a pretty one here and there.

Following WHOIS you will see the occasional registrar.

Lastly for those getting into it, Oversee/E-Promote and http://Adnet.co.nz and a few others are notorious for letting domains get within 24 hours of expiry ... and then renewing it. I've become used to seeing the same domains nearing 'expiry' year after year and don't even bother bidding on domains of theirs about to drop.

Yeah what's all that about? Why does this happen so much... they seem to be expired for weeks and then suddenly get renewed?

Also lots of these seem to get really high bids on expireddomains.co.nz before being renewed - FamilyDoctors.co.nz and Maggie.co.nz both had bids around $5K before they were renewed yesterday.

Well ... the way NZ is setup, you can basically renew right before it drops.

I would wager (I have zero proof on this) that they do this to see the valuation of the domain. It is a free way of getting a "solid offer" without having to ever say yes or no.

I'd never do something like that as I would never trust myself to never make a mistake :) I admittedly did get two domains like this. I saw S and Q.co.nz, didn't realize they were Oversee/E-Promote's, and willy nilly bid a few $s. While most of the bidders stayed away (as normally I would too), somehow the domains dropped and I ended up with those two.
