DIRECT REGISTRATION IN AUSTRALIA COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS FINAL REPORT

"One of the key benefits of direct registration is its potential ability to enhance growth in the value of internet shopping (B2C e-commerce) in Australia, by encouraging Australians to spend more on Australian shopping websites (which affords them protection via Australia’s privacy and consumer protection laws) and relatively less on overseas shopping websites."

I'd give that conclusion a big fat F. F for fiction. What a joke.

If I were a member of auDA, I'd request my money back.

"However, the number of new domains will be limited by defensive registrations. Businesses may feel pressure to obtain the direct domain that matches their third-level domain to avoid confusion. Such defensive registration will increase the costs for businesses, but may be of limited value to those businesses if the domain is simply used to redirect to their .com.au domain."

Huh? So that's not a benefit right?

So all the small businesses have to go out and register the shorter version of their domain name so that people can type a shorter name into the address bar. That'll be an extra $77.99 (MelbourneIT - bit of a rip off eh Brett) per business right.

"Expanded Eligibility

The eligibility rules for a .au domain name will include any legal person with an Australian presence."

So this cost benefit report is based on this assumption?

So basically .au will be the down under version of .info - a quick and easy way to devalue the entire Australian domain name system in one stupid decision. Good for MelbourneIT .... in the short term. Is anyone from MelbourneIT on the PRP?

"4.2.2 Resource cost per domain name
In the central case of the cost-benefit analysis, it is assumed that the resource cost of registering a domain name in Australia is $10 per year. If the resource cost is $7 per year, the threshold additional growth in the value of internet shopping that is needed to offset the costs of direct registration is 0.027 per cent per annum in the low adoption of direct registration scenario and 0.045 per cent per annum in the high adoption of direct registration scenario, If the resource cost per domain name is $13 per year, the corresponding thresholds are 0.047 per cent per annum and 0.068 per cent per annum respectively."

So what if the resource cost is say $39 pa (MelbourneIT)?

Circle jerkery at it's finest:
1. The are saying direct registrations will improve e-commerce by allowing access to .au domains by relaxing requirements like having an ABN.
2. Don't businesses require an ABN to run a business? And that's the current requirement to get a .com.au domain!

The problem BF is where does the stupidity start and where does it end?
the reality is this is all cloak and daggers, its an OLD sales trick and was used when bringing in the .uk in my belief.
what they do is through a heap of s*&t at us to spend time fighting and writing against us thus creating " busy work "
whilst all the time they have the real plan so once they throw that in everyone thinks they won when they actually compromised and lost !
basically telling someone the car they are buying is worth $10k because of this, this and this and then letting you bet them down to $8k when the car isn't even worth $6k....... so you got totally ripped off.

and whilst this is all happening you have forgotten about all the lies they told and promises they didn't keep.

but right now they have a position where they don't need anyone's permission, all this is just ticking boxes for the government, so has someone checked their scorecard? hows that membership drive going? can't find another 955 new members a month these days? or just don't need to!

right now auda is throwing out all these sideline balls when the real one is the total lack of need for a .au , even their reports suggest there is no need so they are grabbing a straws for reason why to.

once again they have skipped past viability and any form of communication to domain owners and straight into "now available"

bottom line is no sane small business person can see a need for a direct reg and the only reason it is a short lived money grab.

For domainers they have an easy option, and that is to stop investing in .com.au domains. The extension is slowly eroding in importance and function, enduser interest in declining, the extension is not stable and .com is becoming more viable for local businesses.

The extension is missing out an an entire market of micro businesses who don't yet tick all the red tape boxes, one day many of those will be larger businesses. All this is why .com.au is barely growing whilst .com is still growing at 5% per year.

At the end of the day the only thing domainers really control in this is where their money goes. In the long run people will be better off with auDA's proposed crazy new rules. It is like Crown Casino saying they don't want gamblers.

Stop buying .com.au domains!
