ABC TV auDA story

The ABC TV will be running a story about auDA.org.au shortly. It will be interesting to hear and see what makes it into the story.

I believe auDA CEO Cameron Boardman will be interviewed.

I hope we do not hear any false and misleading claims such as:
".au will be shorter, sharper, better, better for branding, more memorable etc"
"we are just following the .uk and .nz and they have both been successful"
"we have done surveys and community engagement" ..
"This is innovation" etc.
"gives individuals more options to get the name they want"... really can an individual get realstate.au?

We'll I certainly don't think anyone else from auDA will be publicly willing to argue this proposal is a good idea, if things go badly they can then just say they were against it all along. Cameron is being thrown under the bus.

I hope they ask why there are so many Victorian liberal party members involved, on the payroll as employees, directors and consultants.

i missed it ! but watched it on the computer only because someone sent me a link, i found it very "fair", presenting a SHORT view of both sides of the story, i was talking to my "dubbodentist a few minutes ago as we always talk after midnight on a week night and apparently he missed it as well !

now if there was just some way to inform domain name owners of BOTH sides of the story, that would be great.

The proliferation of Victorian liberal party members in key positions and even flunky positions speaks to the control a single group has over a public resource.

It shows it has been compromised in terms of decision making by pushing direct registrations and is not therefore a member organisation at all.

Tellingly, it has delayed replacement of a demand side director and small business representative on a key panel. Why? To stop opposing views or votes on key decisions?

Can someone explain that comment. I do not understand.

I didn't really follow that bit either. Cameron is the AUDA scapegoat here, I think he has been told to defend it in the media by some other directors and those directors will simply disclaim all responsibly if the proposal falls apart.

I would like to see the directors who support the proposal go out into the media and tell Australia why this is a good for business and how it is not a cash grab.

Mr Chris Leptos has joined dntrade so maybe he can come and tell us if he actually supports direct registrations?

How about you Erhan. Do you support it or not?

He is referring to people using Amazon and facebook etc for their web presence instead of registering and using a .au domain name.

Why on earth would a retailer who uses Amazon as their web presence want a .au? Australia's most respected retail conference Retail Global, has told members it's a cash grab. Whoever you are.

Many sellers who use Amazon and Facebook still have websites as another avenue to sell but I’m sure many here would agree that there has been some movement over time to use one channel to sell and it hasn’t been through a traditional website due to the lower initial startup cost. That’s the competition that he is mentioning in that interview.

putting my web designer hat on, i have always said to people " do you own it" ?
if facebook/amazon/ebay/etc closes you down what HOPE do you have to actually get it back up? to me its like setting up shop in the middle of a dry river bed because the rent is cheap !!!
one day its gonna flood.
smart business people use domain names, dumb cheap business people never will

I agree Tim. At the end of the day you have nothing and if they change the rules and costs overnight you have to wear it but for people starting out it’s a cheap and effective way to get going. Also these sites have a huge captive audience straight up and that’s why there’s been such a big shift. A quick look at Facebook’s advertising revenue tells the picture.

i advise my clients to use FB advertising if they want, but still point to a domain name, any web designer would do this, its the people getting advice from "their cousin the butcher " who are heading down the wrong road.

ohhh, also, does anyone want to come to an amway meeting i am having?

Has Cameron got his terminology wrong because Amazon Web Services is a cloud computing platform. The comment still doesn’t make sense to me.

Does he mean businesses listing products for sale on Amazon.com/.com.au?

I don't know who you are anonymous person but businesses can already setup on .com.au a current valued brand. Where is their data to support that argument?

Are talking engagement stats, CTR or actions? I don't know who you are but your argument is not a good reason for .AU, it only supports the promotion of .com.au, an existing trusted brand.
