The rising popularity of .Com in Australia

Is the .com extension recognised all over the world?

Joke question?
.com is the world best's domain name but often people will try for their most popular local market extension also.

In Australia with 90% of registrations the most popular is the .COM.AU... based also on the heavy promotion by supply businesses, people and consumers should invest and register .com.au names

There are still hundreds of millions of variations of .com.au, .net.au, .id.au, .org.au, .asn.org.au, .gov.au etc available for people to register... they have not "run out" as some people have wrongly falsely stated to say we need another competing additional .au extension ( which they would profit from of course!)

Had to reply for the Newbies also
for newbies please state the reality, its NOT .99 cents for every year for the future, and in the case of a .com.au its often a cheaper advertised price for 1 year but because you HAVE to pay 2 yr the second year balances out the overall cost, TRUE !
and same in UK on my own research.
i've said this before "its a loss leader" to sell you other products, we did it at woolworths EVERY week and they still do it,

50% of fresh registrations are dropped after the first year, so for a lot of people it really will only be 99 cents.

well then they are "nobodies", REAL people need to consider holding costs for a domain they are using.

tim

How are they nobodies?

Most business ideas don't work out, the domain is dropped after a year. The 99 cent 1st year is a big saving considering the drop rate.

The Liberal Party of Australia seems to understand,

This week Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull defended the Liberal Party’s decision to register kristinakeneally.com and use it to attack the former NSW Premier, now challenging John Alexander in Bennelong. Keneally herself uses the Australian domain name kristinakeneally.com.au, with the .au suffix.

But the idea of opponents hijacking domain names linked to candidates names in future may see them scuttling to register both the .com and .com.au versions before their opponents do. The same tactics can be used in business.

Intellectual property and information security lawyer Nicole Murdoch who handles domain name disputes says it is better to register a .com.au domain name and .com name to avoid the issue in the first place.

Congrats to Nicole on being the featured expert also!

I wonder how Kristina would go in a Urdp?

Im sorry Nicole Murdoch on this one it is not a 'free for all" on who can register a .com. There are still some rules.. maybe the newspaper misquoted you. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/technology/keneally-domain-name-hijacking-has-implications-for-business/news-story/a9fbd3627054d23eb915d987b5700923
"But in the case of .com domain names without .au (as in kristinakeneally.com), there were no rules restricting who could register particular domain names — it was a free for all."

...Let's see once Kristina lodges :). Maybe some enterprising Domain Name IP law firm will contact her. She may get more $$ than just the name back under these political circumstances and how they used her name against her.

I think Malcolm may lose this and have some egg on his face but let's see.

I see maybe now what Nicole was saying about the process of who could register a .com as being a "free for all" but of course the follow up point was it then being disputed and possibly for transfer due to various policy reasons.

I'm not a fan of this tactic. It does, however, highlight the importance of owning the .com, especially when it is available for hand registration. Doing so avoids a situation like this, and the messy and stressful process of going through a UDRP with no guarantee of securing the domain.

I'll second the congrats to Nicole on being the featured expert.

ALP donations would probably be used for the Udrp ?

They'd probably lose if it was properly defended anyway, looks like a legit gripe site to me.

Would they be able to prove any of the 3 pillars?
