Deloitte Report Released on .AU

See here, direct registration analysis from Page 10,

https://www.auda.org.au/assets/DAE-auDA-final-report-201117.pdf

Couple of first thoughts,
  • The data seems very dated, a year old? Did they write it 12 months ago then spend a year going back and forward with AUDA over the content?
  • This chart may well say it all,

2015 had the highest uptake for direct registrations but the next year no one was interested…it appears more people decided to register third level domains (yourname.co.nz) than the second level (yourname.nz).

What a pump and dump - from 60k+ and then down to 10k

The report doesn’t include renewal rates which would give us good look at the abandonment rate of both third and second level, also the report doesn’t include defensive registration stats of which the majority of second level registration would have been.

Did you see Delloits attitude on defensive registrations:

Costs of direct registration would be relatively small technical costs, the costs to businesses of registering these domain names and the potential for some negative behaviours such as cybersquatting or defensive registrations to occur.

The fact they put these two totally different intentions together in one sentence is offensive - cybersquatting or defensive registrations to occur.

This > "Consultations should ultimately focus on the end users of domains: businesses and individuals who register the domains and Australians browsing the web. Consultations can easily focus on auDA members, such as registrants, re-sellers and those who activity participate in the secondhand domain market. These individuals and businesses, however, make up only a very small percentage of domain owners."
(page 19)

Direct registrations haven't been explained, nor have the ramifications, to the Australian public.

It's a pretty innocuous report. Why did it take so long to be released?
Was it because it didn't fit with the current board's rush to implement direct registrations?

I would say collectively, members on this forum probably own over 50% or more of the domain market.

I would say 1000's of people (registrants) are subscribers to the expired auction platforms.I doubt the % of expired auction subscribers compared to their portfolio of names held is small. Did they call netfleet, drop, DS and ask , "Hey, how many people are on your books" I doubt it.

Would definitely say this is drops effecting things. The DNC does split out all this data though,

https://www.dnc.org.nz/the-commission/statistics

There is far more interest in .co.nz than .nz for new registrations, e.g. the latest available month (other months are much the same)

Of course .uk is far more extreme where there is barely any interest in the .uk's.

.uk stats

Note the recent surge in .uk (2nd level) is just "robo registrations" being put into people's accounts without permission. Real interest is 10:1 in favour of .co.uk.

In regard to .uk the Deloitte Report is making a bold and likely to prove false claim with this statement,

Consultations suggest that there will likely be a rapid increase in registrations in 2019 when the automatic reservation period nears its end.

I wonder who they were consulting with to make a claim like that? Nominet or AUDA perhaps?

The fact is there is just very little interest in .uk, with anyone.

"...the potential for some negative behaviours such as cybersquatting or defensive registrations to occur
."

It is either very ill informed or I hope they meant to say it is negative behaviour that people had to pay to defend their existing domain name interests or IP etc...

Perhaps someone can raise this at the AGM for clarification. It reads poorly for a paid report which is supposed to benefit the .au namespace and those millions of people / companies/ organisations etc who have invested massively into it over the years.

Sort of like biting the very hands that feed you..?

I would like to compare the draft Deloitte Report with the published one to see if anything was amended. This statement really should have been edited or it raises concerns about real knowledge and I feel it may be a cause of embaressment.
