Hi All,

I haven't been able to find a similar thread, apologies if duplicating.....if you were willing to disclose, what was your first outlay, way back when you kicked off your own personal DN Empire? What was it?

For 99% it would be a hand reg.

If we exclude hand reg, I think my first was touristattractions.com.au which I paid just under a grand for at auction, and then sold to another DNtrade member within a few days for a few hundred profit.

That was back in 2010. How time flies...

I didn't take it all too seriously when I started and regged a heap of .coms that formed the image of a coke style bottle when centered on a page. It was an interactive art thing with the title being RobotBeer.Com I really did like the concept but it was $500 a year to maintain so let them drop. I cannot recall ever seeing something similar ....... Van Gogh also died poor LOL

My first purchase was a .com.au domain for the business that I was running at the time. I had no idea about 'domaining' way back then, I just needed a domain for my promotions business!

Some of my early purchases when I first discovered domaining were pretty bad, and I know that's a very common story. For that reason, I think first purchases are interesting, but recent purchases are probably more informative (in terms of what to buy).

I do agree, what are your thoughts on BIN vs auction purchasing?

warning---- a long post---------
now know as a " DM post " ( as of last nights dnt meetup in honour of domainnames "

mine was hand reg as i didn't know about "buying" and back in 2000 it wasn't allowed anyway.
in 2000 a domain name had to match a reg business name EXACTLY, with the letters in order !!!
melbourne IT was the place to secure domains for $145, so you had your $99 bus reg fee + the $145 domain fee.
so my first business in the internet was providing this service of getting a domain name at a price of $300 (per gst)
and i was selling @ 10 a month whilst working for the local radio station selling advertising and thats how i riggled my way into the businesses LOL, i'd try to seel them radio and if it was a no i'd chat about this amazing new thing called the internet !!!.
once they got the name i'd suggest a website WHICH by the way i happened to know how to do as i learnt it off this NEW thing called google !
and of course they needed to photograph their business and products and I JUST HAPPENED to have a commercial advertising photography degree !!! LOL

now i'm off track !

my first PURCHASE was a .com of which i owned the the .com.au, i bought it off a guy in san fran in 2001, i had to send him a western union cheque !!!! and he confirmed he got it, it then took him a YEAR to send em the key, i thought i'd done my money but he eventually did the right thing, it cost me $300 USD in 2001 and i kept it for years but essentially it was my girlfriends, when we broke up i asked her to take control of it and she didn't so i let it drop :(
but you make mistakes !

my first .com.au purchase wasn't until 2010 when i bought a set of names which cost me ????? i don't keep these records like others but i think it was $7k for 3 names? maybe less ?, this REALLY got me started buying domains

but my advice now and i am sure others will agree, you get a RUSH at the start and you should really hold back because its gonna cost you, then you start to understand and you start dropping or cleaning out and then you come down to what is a good level with higher quality.
NOTE: i don't class myself as a domainer, my income does not come from selling, my income comes from development.

The first two domains I registered were a .com and a .com.au for my own business. My first domainer purchase was a .fr that I later dropped — good keyword, wrong extension. Surprisingly, my first sale was a hand registered .net.au that was snapped up by the .com.au owner in an auction for the grand sum of $151.

I don't have a particular preference, it all comes down to the qualities of the domain and the price.

  1. I register (a small number) of available domains;
  2. I purchase expired domains (via DomainShield.com.au, Drop.com.au and Netfleet.com.au);
  3. I purchase marketplace-listed domains; and
  4. I purchase directly from existing registrants.

However, it's worth keeping the following in mind when it comes to buying expired .au domains:

The uncertainty around direct registrations (.au) is something to be mindful of for your own investment strategy. Some people have opted to cease buying on the drops altogether; others (myself included) are still buying, but perhaps thinking twice on bigger purchases!

Thanks, some value content there, greatly appreciated and it's becoming clearer I need to set my sights higher on my initial outlay to "get the ball rolling", thanks for sharing ~ SS

Nah, you don't need to hand over huge sums of cash, you'll can mine out some good domains even in the .com
I recently registered BMXCLUBS..COM cost me $10 bucks @ namecheap plenty of decent names in the .com.au

My advice to you...
week 1.
Open an excel spreadsheet and start mining - you'll be surprised with what you will find. Don't register any of them until, you have build a solid 100 domains.

when you have done that proceed to week 2.

Mining = Find and hand register new .com and wait for someone to OTP?

Yeah, domain mining = jump in front of a site like Ventraip.com.au go to bulk look up and start searching for unregistered keyword combinations.

Populate your discoveries in excel then DYOR for market relevancy in your discoveries and when your satisfied that you can sell into it, go nuts.

I like the sound of this. A lot. Cheers
