Netfleet Aftermarket Auctions - Now Live!

Hi Guys

Just a quick note to let you all know we have kicked off the first of many domain aftermarket auctions on Netfleet:

http://www.netfleet.com.au/index.php?a=auctions

We have a small selection of excellent domain names up for auction right now. The auction will run from now, until Wednesday 9th June 3pm AEST, so just under 9 days to go.

A few domains have hidden reserves, however these have been set very low. However many have no reserve at all, so its wide open to all.

We hope you enjoy the new platform, happy bidding!

Cheers
Mark

Yes, it's linked to from here:

http://www.netfleet.com.au/buy-domains

And will feature on the home page, in searches, have its own category and RSS feed - this will be completed by COB today

Cheers
Mark

This is all done now. As a side note, RSS feeds for our aftermarket auctions, and snapper auctions, and other feeds can be found here:

http://www.netfleet.com.au/feed.php

Also, we have decided to flag domains in our aftermarket auction where the reserve has been met with a, well, flag:

Always keen to hear any further suggestions to make the process smoother...

Cheers, Mark

Just a reminder guys - this auction ends this afternoon. They have nearly all met reserve so there will be plenty of sales and as it stands some real bargains to be had.

TaxCalculator.com.au has have fresh new unique content just written for it since the auction started (sold as developed website with CMS). Cheats.net.au needs just a $100 bid to get it off the mark (2,240,000 LOCAL searches!), same with FunnyQuotes.com.au needing a $100 bid (huge search volume & dead easy development route). The Category Killer Baseball.net.au is chasing an opening bid as is the huge search volume & easily monetisable RingTone.net.au.

Also, because this is the first aftermarket auction with large exposure, I strongly recommend that you don't wait until the last seconds (or even the last minute or two) before placing your bids. There is the possibility that server load might jam the system and they may not go through in time. To save yourself heartache, please make your proxy bids early and relax.... :)

Well done guys. Some great results again. These after market auctions seem to be a good thing.

Certainly happy with my sale and purchase of two domains!

I find it interesting that the only three not to sell were the only '.net.au' domains.

It appears people are still very skeptical of the .net.au extension.

For example personally speaking if I had any involvement with Baseball sure I couldn't get the .com.au as the Australian Organisation already has it but I would be more than happy with the .net.au equivalent.

More and more I'm noticing businesses either adding additional letters or numbers to a domain or even a descriptive word just because the .com.au was already taken.

Although baseball may not be the best example here as it would appear the Australian market isn't that interested in the sport, my argument goes beyond the three listed in the auction to the countless other brandable/memorable domains either still available for reg or listed for sale at only fraction or their .com.au equivalents.

Oh well, i guess it just means the day when people do finally realise there is great value in generic .net.au they will be long gone and the asking values would have increased significantly.

I think the fact it was baseball.net.au limited overall interest, had it been tennis.net.au, football.net.au or cricket.net.au I'm more confident it would've received a bid and sold.

Even if it had been baseball.com.au the sale price would've struggled to reach $1000 imo.

Hey Sway!

Do you mind if I ask why you think buying .net.au is a good idea? (Other than the notable price difference?)

I personally dislike .net.au's because they never seem to rank.
So if it doesn't rank, then we need to rely on direct traffic. In which case the average user is far less familiar with the .net.au as oppose to .com or .com.au.

If your experience has told you otherwise, I would love to know.

Cheers for the help.

Yeah, you are right Smile
Nobody is ever going to want generic .net.au
Google will always discriminate against them, no matter what site or what SEO
They are absolutely worthless
Nobody is ever going to pay to buy a .net.au
The general public has never heard of .net.au
What ever you do , do NOT register any generic .net.au

I remember saying exactly the same thing about LLL.com some years ago

The registration price is the last thing I thought of as most registrars have them equally priced anyway.

The reason its a good idea is simple, 'You Can Get Better Names' which are much more brandable. Of course much like global domains the equivalent '.com.au' will always be the preferred extension over the .net.au but it doesn't mean that 'ALL' .com.au's are better than .net.au's.

For example which domain do you think is better, 'wesellslippers.com.au' or 'slippers.net.au'?

Think back when people were signing up for things like hotmail, gmail and myspace. Remember if your desired username wasn't available it would usually suggest another one with numbers after it. This became a joke, you would have johnsmith1, johnsmith2, johnsmith367262452 etc... which simply became way too difficult to remember so you would have to write it down if you intended on using it in the future.

Much like this, if you're promoting a website you want people to be able to remember it, not have to write it down. Sure by having a .net.au you may lose some traffic to the .com.au version for those people who are 'trained' to add that to domains but do you really think mybusiness3637673.com.au is going to fair any better?

Overall the discussion about '.net.au' not ranking is rubbish if you ask me as I have had recent success with a few hand regg'ed .net.au's.

The reason they aren't showing so much in search results is to do more with the lack of development going into them than the actual Search Engine algorithm.

I remember saying exactly the same thing about LLL.com some years ago

pffff 'LLL.com' who on earth would want one of those pieces of junk. :p

I have a few .net.au's which rank fairly well. I'd say that there's a bit more work involved and you're purely looking at seo or paid traffic - what i'd call 'click traffic'.
