Update ..... i just clicked on the link above and it worked ??? Which is a good thing because it's hard enough to get people to understand what a domain name is, yet alone try something new? Now the site appears to be a third party site that sends you to a few different options

Some ridiculous .melbourne advertising (seems to be a lot of this on Facebook).

Note the claimed perks,

-How is this going to result in a shorter domain name? It is possibly the longest URL in history.
-Where is the evidence of a potential uptick in SEO results?

I was walking yesterday and spotted qsigns.melbourne ..... it then occurred to me, why limit yourself to one location ? On the same walk I spotted three .net.au's ..... they do get used

" Google: New Top Level Domains (TLD) Will Not Help Rankings
Mar 15, 2012 • 8:24 am | (17) by Barry Schwartz | Filed Under Google Search Engine Optimization

Yesterday Google's Matt Cutts went out of his way to debunk a story in Marketing Magazine named New top-level domains to trump .com in Google search results.

Adrian Kinderis CEO of ARI Registry Services made the claim as follows:

Will a new TLD web address automatically be favoured by Google over a .com equivalent? Quite simply, yes it will.

Wow! How can people spread such misinformation (I better be careful, I am sure I said things that weren't true as well). But seriously, this?

I am glad Matt Cutts called him out. Matt wrote:

Sorry, but that's just not true, and as an engineer in the search quality team at Google, I feel the need to debunk this misconception. Google has a lot of experience in returning relevant web pages, regardless of the top-level domain (TLD). Google will attempt to rank new TLDs appropriately, but I don't expect a new TLD to get any kind of initial preference over .com, and I wouldn't bet on that happening in the long-term either. If you want to register an entirely new TLD for other reasons, that's your choice, but you shouldn't register a TLD in the mistaken belief that you'll get some sort of boost in search engine rankings.

I hate when I hear people talk about proven SEO methods that they read from some marketing magazine, blog or even places like NY Times and claim it to be true because it was written. Something like this hurts the industry.

One thing, this is a great way for someone to lose his reputation as being an expert in anything. You said something so concret as fact and then a Google representative who knows the algorithm says you are absolutely wrong - well, that has to hurt your reputation.

What makes it worse is that he claims to have been "researching this topic" for about 6 years. Amazing.

Matt Cutts: No, new TLDs will not automatically get a boost over .com in search results

by Andrew Allemann — March 14, 2012

Straight from the horse’s mouth: don’t expect an SEO benefit from your new TLD.

Yesterday Adrian Kinderis, CEO of new TLD registry services provider ARI Registry Services, published a piece saying that new top level domains will automatically be favored by Google over .com:

Will a new TLD web address automatically be favoured by Google over a .com equivalent? Quite simply, yes it will.

While many people scoffed at this, it was still open to debate.

But now Matt Cutts, Google’s search quality czar, just shot this down on Google+:

I read a post by someone offering new top-level domain (TLDs). They made this claim: “Will a new TLD web address automatically be favoured by Google over a .com equivalent? Quite simply, yes it will.”

Sorry, but that’s just not true, and as an engineer in the search quality team at Google, I feel the need to debunk this misconception. Google has a lot of experience in returning relevant web pages, regardless of the top-level domain (TLD). Google will attempt to rank new TLDs appropriately, but I don’t expect a new TLD to get any kind of initial preference over .com, and I wouldn’t bet on that happening in the long-term either. The logic behind nTLDs having a potential SEO advantage is that advertising using the nTLDs domains can affect CTR, and CTR in turn can contribute to organic ranking. Whether this is actually true is another thing... but I guess that's why they used the word 'potential'.

Contrary to popular belief around here, i have seen some positive organic movement when moving clients to .melbourne & .sydney domains. Majority of the time this was to escape an algorithmic penalty, so very hard to tell if the TLD itself played a role. I have seen vans driving around advertising their .melbourne websites so they do get used, when using a nTLD on your signage be sure to have a www. at the beginning as i believe the general population is not %100 familiar with nTLD's.

As mentioned above, the nTLD's do tend to achieve better CTR's when it comes to organic search - which is definitely a ranking factor.

How often do you see an ntld rank well on a competitive term, I haven't seen it very often.

Even Google has said these claims by ntld registries are untrue.

And yet there's a whole industry based on the premise of achieving the best position in those search results. Who should we believe? SEO companies or companies pushing ntld's?

Find Your Ideal .sydney or .melbourne Domain Name Today

There is no better time to register a .sydney or .melbourne domain name as we’re currently running a 90% off promotion! .melbourne and .sydney domain names do not require an ABN/ACN/BN to register and can be registered for up to 10 years at a time. You can register your very own domain name here."

  • $6.95 a year
  • No red tape
  • No auDA problems
  • Anyone can register it

This is is why auDA needs to look at what they are doing wrong with the current .au domain name extensions, too much red tape and why people do look at other options sometimes.

Best position in SEO is being ranked out of frame below the ads for a decent keyword.
