SEO,

Do you have any (or ranked any for others) highly ranked .net.au sites?

There's always a bit of conjecture with these so show us the light man.

.net.au

In theory Google determines and considers all the TLD the same... but we know that's not right...

example: the google algorithm when godaddy launched the $0.99 for .info decided to slapped any new .info domain name and gave them a sandbox longer than normal.

I have clients with net.au that are well ranked.
my theory is that .com.au domain names are usually older... and the links that they have pointing to their sites are always older than then once of a .net.au

don't forget the ranking is not just about the amount of links, but also domain age but also the age of links....

may be I should create an SEO experiment website and register 2 random domain names in .com.au and net.au just to test the theory....

That would be a really good test.

I actually mentioned the very thing only the other day for someone else to "hopefully" experiment as is it out of my realms of brainpower.

Cheers ... and goodluck.

(could be a net.au goldrush if you can pull this off)

I've hand reg'd new domains, setup joomla, added 3 articles and I've hit front page within 2 weeks. I've heard people say domain age this, domain age that, it's personally something I ignore. I pay over $2k a month for outsourced seo for one of my businesses, nothing pissed me off more than when one of their guys told me my site was a 'challenge' because of my domain's age.

Well, I should elaborate that after 2 months of their expert SEO I had a whopping 8 back-links which pissed me off. Domain age may be a factor, but personally I think its importance is exaggerated.

Build a quality site, with constantly evolving and quality content, add a truckload of back-links and I guarantee it wont lose out to an older domain on that premise.

Timmy, domain age is a FACTOR... for serious competitive keywords.

Age can actually being a factor regarding taking over a position... It is not your SEO guys saying that... is actually google mentioning it.

Just go out there and google "credit cards" , "buy a house" , "mortgages" "forex" "bank loans" ... how many less than 2 year domain names do you see in top 10? ;)

Exactly... a TRUCKLOAD of backlinks....

and why older domain names rank faster... because they usually have OLDER links... than a new domain name... :p

Then wouldn't I be better off paying some indian to build back-links to my site and spend $1800 a month on SEM if I am never going to see the top spot? hehe

Off course, keep the indian guy ;) keep the backlinks coming.... but also keep buying second hand domain names ;) why pay someone to build backlinks if you can pay $20 for a domain name that has already truckloads of backlinks .... ? Check Freshdrop.com to get an idea...

Example:

Discount Vouchers

Keyword: Discount Vouchers

1st position (Google Australia)
Aug 17, 2000

3rd position
Dec 12, 2005

4rd positon
Sep 27, 2001

5th position
Apr 10, 2007

These are registration dates ;)

But... off course, you can bit age with quality links off course, specially if Position 1 is there by osmosis... and not by any SEO

Sorry.. spellings mistake

You can beat the age of any domain name... with quality links for your target keyword, specially when position Number 1... is number 1 mainly because google didn't find any better option for position number 1.

Many times a site is 1st.. and they are not even aware they are 1st for THE KEYWORD you are trying to get your site to rank... make sense?
