Page preference

I've got a relatively new client.

His site was over optimised prior to me coming on, so I've been scaling back and trying to give each page focus.

My initial though was to preference a product page that he wants to be known for.You know, have the user land on the right page etc etc.

I decided to give the homepage (root) other industry terms. We did mention the keyword term for the internal page and hyperlink it to the internal product page. Now I know Google doesn't give as much juice to internal links as it once did. But the link made sense for those who land on the home page and want to find this product immediatly and easily.

Google started ranking his main product (top of second page) but not the page I created but the home page. Last week, this changed and Google started prferencing the product page. Although on page 3 at least it was the right page.

So i just checked the rankings and we're back ranking at top of second page.

I should note, prior to this happening I discussed with client if we should change the strategy to push focus to the home page, he preffered my initial thoughts to have users land on the right page. This is also similar to some of his biggest online competitors.

Love to get peoples thoughts here.

Well I think one thing you need to look out for is making large scales changes to title tags on sites with out doing the prior analysis. Have seen many companies over the years decided the want to change a series of titles and they get wiped out.

What is the key Goal here - push more quality content, quality links and internal link to the target page they want to push?

Ideally you want to push product pages to rank for relevant keywords as they will work better from a conversion point of view, yet where you have a highly competitive keyword it may only be home pages which rank for these terms as they are naturally more authoritative.

I agree. But in this case the site didn't rank at all for their main term or at least not in the top 100. The meta title was over optimised.

Any thoughts on what page I should push for preference. Is google telling me to give up on the product page and focus on the home page due to the fluctuations between the two ?

You could just make the home page the conversion page like Kogan does, yet this limited product specific targeting.

I suggested this. The owner was open to it but his no2 is on holidays. Only other issue is that it's design niche, so homepage feel is important.
