just get them in order on the page, the top H1, next H2 etc.
if you are using wordpress its easy to use the CSS to format and change your complete site.
i always get my programmers to create a "sample" page that i can show the client and they can refer back to later on how they should use the formatting as they grow their sites, this includes right down to H6, indents, point form, italic, block text etccc.
unfortunately MOST revert back to a MSword type mentality and start formatting in each page

There's a few SEOs who say they're not relevant. But I think they make the job easier in sending a clear and direct statement to readers (human or bot).

i agree, it is also the simplest way to format an ENTIRE site, it just makes everything neater if you stick with it and creates a better user experience IMO.

I feel they are relevant to squeeze the extra SEO out of your site. Used correctly, they are a quality indicator. If your site has well formatted HTML including the use of H1, H2, H3, etc. it will improve the readability and thus lower the bounce rate on your site. If you have a nice low bounce rate, coupled with a nice fast site, and great quality content, you are on your way.

Am in the process of fixing this... I need to update the css as I do not like the way the standard wordpress makes them look.
Am just planning on making them all look like body text and creating h1 - h6 tags starting from top to bottom instering them around kewords down the page. <--- is this a good idea?
As per the MSword type mentality I find wordpress can be very cumbersome as it likes to not add spaces, add extra spaces, etc.
I generally have found by copying the text out of wordpress into MSword and then back into Wordpress it fixes the formatting. <-- Is this a common problem or am I doing something weird?

Historically it's never been a good idea to copy from word into any wysiwyg.
This is because the two systems are coded in different ways. msword has a heap of hidden meta data that also gets copied across, which can break the formatting of your site (in non IE browsers).
As a precaution it's always been better to paste into notepad, copy/paste again and then reformat. Some wysiwyg editors also have a paste from word button, but I don't trust them.

Use the plain text editor and then fix up the formatting. Otherwise use html to clean from word. It's much of a muchness.

thats generally the worst thing you can do, have you looked at the code produced???
best to use notepad IMO.
go spend some time on youtube searching for tutorials you'll pick up a great deal of info there quicker then here.
