Premium DOMAIN NAMES not in use?

I was looking at some fishing websites today and decided to check out what the owners were doing with fishing.com.au just out of interest in the subject matter and domain side of things.

I was surprised to see that they had a redirect in place to fishnet.com.au and thought what a waste and under utilisation of a premium domain name, even though they still rank on page 1 for the term "fishing".

Anyone else seen a similar waste of a premium domain name?

I don't see it as a waste. They spent money on building their brand, Fishnet.

At some stage after, they were able to secure fishing.com.au. They have a brand they want to keep building, and they are protecting that by stopping anyone else use fishing.com.au

Makes perfect sense to me.

Agree with Jono, they have built a brand off Fishnet why move it over to Fishing.com.au, just protect your assets.

they may rank first page but they do rank second last on my search which is easy to drop off.

even though I agree with johno69 in part, I think they should be building a profile on fishing DCA as insurance.

It is possible that they could do better if they use the premium domain as primary site. But a lot of work involved with the change of branding, it would need to be handled strategically.

it took woollies 25 years in Victoria to final change from "safeway" , best to start now ! build fishing now as a stand alone, perfect timing to do a responsive website and let the other one just keep ticking over.

Don't you think Google would want to penalise development efforts like that?

hasn't for me and I have been doing it pre panda, just don't duplicate the site.

I don't see it as being any different then ranking on the first page for your domain + hotfrog + yp + etccccc

I'm not say they are doing it now, I'm saying it is something Google would want to do, because it is gaming the system, that is something we all love to do until there is some "brand new nasty Google update which has targeted my sites for no good reason at all".

I think following this strategy a penalty is going to get applied at some point, so it is not insurance, I'd say it is the opposite.

I'd redirect to Fishing.com.au. Put both logos names on the Fishing.com.au Branded site at the top until Fishing.com.au brand was recognised by all the existing users as where the company was going

Makes sense that you would not want your premium domain name to be at risk of being ruined by some future Google algo update.

Depends what the domain is worth, like $xx,xxx or more, and you could also think about investing in tissues for when Google puts you in the sin bin and burns your domain for you.

My priority would be to update the site itself (design, platform) rather then worry about a domain. The fishnet name is solid and established.
