yep, yahoo have proved to be not good decision makers in the last 10 years, they are also presently not making good decisions.

choosing a .com.au broker would have been a FAR BETTER decision to maximise the sale

carsales probably didnt even know about it or may not have been "Premium" registered properly with Sedo in time. If they are a market cap Billion company now they could justify $1 Million for it ( due to its old sales price and history of success) .. they may have missed the deal of the century also.... maybe they where also asleep..

Do carsales spend significant amount of money on domains that aren't specifically car related? Don't think they can be relied upon to by everything and anything.

I doubt this will be a quick flip snoopy.
If the sale goes through, it will make the new owner a lot of money.
Me thinks this has "self managed super fund" written all over it..

I gave it some serious thought today and came to the following conclusions:

1. I'm currently working on bigger deals, so the reality is that this would be a distraction.

2. You just don't know what the top proxy bid was. You need two people in an auction.

Tim, the name is worth what it sold for at an auction that people here knew was happening. People can say it is worth over 100k till the cows come home, or that they'd pay that themselves. When it comes down to it though the won't actually offer anything, they'll back away for any reason other than having to admit the name just sold for what it is actually worth.

This thread is credit.com.au all over again.

The site was given a new address within the yahoo.com domain. In August 2003, Yahoo! announced that the site would be shutting down and directed users to eBay.

$24 Million to shut down a competitor sold.com.au back in 2001 was big money!

use the wayback machine and you will see the original sold.com.au site was incredibly simple and basic. it in fact seemed to be just run off software from (or within) another company auctions.com.

Oh my what a mistake for a new boss not know her predecesors paid $24 Million for it in Australia years ago and why... Current Yahoo staff thought it had never been used apparently .. was a .com.au and of no real interest to them in USA ...so they just sold it!

If the domain is online-store related/ auction site related it is connected to their Quick Sale business (they own). They do not seem to just buy car domains. That been said they only seem to want domains with an inherent benefit/value to the business or higher quality EMD value.

I recently sold them a domain in the Auction Site market.

My guess is they have purchased sold.com.au, that been said I could be wrong it could be any one!

Hi all, total newbie here...but have some experience with running my own businesses. Basically trying to understand how this was sold so cheap? Did it go offshore? What would stop somebody with some money doing the Fairfax thing again and building this up to a sales portal offering everything? Eg, Real Estate...Cars...High End Auctions ( paintings, etc). All I can see is opportunity here. This would have to be the best generic possible?
