Other than Honan i am wondering if anyone here has done an app yet, did it go to plan? was it hard to get it on itunes/google play .... what else may have happened? Did you develop it or pay for the app to be produced?

I am just toying with a few ideas

I wonder if the developer of angry birds is making money?

I would love to read some opinions, thoughts, experiences

I have created some apps. I outsourced the development but was the brains behind them.

I only own one these days and that's this one: https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/find-poker/id442378374

Was no trouble getting it onto iTunes, or Google Play. Just have to agree to terms etc, and pay your annual developer fees.

I am not really using the app as a direct source of revenue but as a tool to build a user base that in turn generates revenue.

I had the app free for 18 months and was getting around 15-20 downloads a day. Now I have it at 99c i'm getting 1-3 downloads a day. Of that 99c I get 63c.

Australians seem very tight with spending money in the app stores, but very fast to send an email complaint when something is not to their liking.

There are plenty of apps around that are useless, you need to give users something they want to keep using.

Yeah they are not cheap to develop,

I have seen many apps fail, whilst something very basic and free can do well.

Look at Draw something and Snap Chat they are not that advanced, but they are so popular.

My app iSleepIn has had some mild success - https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/isleepin/id562735979?mt=8

Has been on the store for less than a year and has already been profitable.

We are just reskining at the moment for iOS 7 and we are just about to launch it into the Google Play Store.

Development/Design is outsourced, brains have been me and my best mate.

May i ask was development outsourced locally or via India ..etc? is your app on both google and android?

ball park figure on cost ......high $xxx ......low $xxx ?

iSleepin app was designed by one and coded by another. (These two are now working together on another project!).

Our designer was found on 99designs, and we actually won the best design of the month with it - http://99designs.com/designer-blog/2012/09/13/top-9-at-99-results-august-2012/

It was intially built for iOS and then last month we posted on oDesk and hired a Android coder. This should be completed shortly.

Total cost was late $x,xxx for initial development and then just under 2k for it to be brought over to Android.

In App Purchases as they are known are actually the best way to make revenue from your app.

Getting the user to purchase the app is one thing, but keeping their money coming in is another.

We are planning on having in app purchases of different tasks that aren't provided with the original, for example 'Shake to Turn off' etc.

It really shouldn't be that much if you look at doing both platforms when you first create the code. And the guy we hired was, VERY VERY qualified.

Saw a really good presentation tonight on Making Apps and Marketing them via different channels. Heaps of different tips on multi lingual app creation. This one guy was making some good grounds in a global market.

I can share the deck if people are interested.
