Web site to iPhone app

This is my success story!
Today the iPhone app version of my web site www.MelbourneOpShops.com or .com.au went live into the iPhone apps store. It is called Op Shops
It is free.
It locates 361 Melbourne Op shops with reviews and images.. well it will one day. Contributions from users are welcome.
Melbourne's op shops are the best in the world. Clearly.
Anyone else have a story about converting web sites to apps?
I hope to do an android version later in the year
Now I know how to do iPhone apps, that also work on iPads , watch out
I am grateful to a dnt trade member for helping, and many members, including da boss man for their encouragement.

I'm not a fan of straight up website to apps because if I can access your website via a browser, why would I need or want your app clogging up valuable real estate on the home screen? I think a lot of sites don't appreciate just how valuable it is, even when jailbreak + 5 column mod is installed, that's only 30 spaces total on an iphone 5.

Speaking more broadly, requests to install the app version of a website are beyond frustrating as it gets in the way of what I want, which is your website. If I want an app for your site, I'll find it myself.

Your site is a little difficult/frustrating to scroll within Safari because my thumb naturally goes to where you have the map and that means the map moves instead of scrolling down the page.

When I search for op shops (4 results) or opshops (2 results), your app is the 2nd result for both, the 1st of both searches is a paid app. As a free app, you're the first choice for people that don't like to pay for apps. I wonder if you would be better served using the website to promote the app as it's far easier to navigate your app than it is your website as well as moving to track shops Australia wide instead of just Melbourne.

I would also guess op shopping is more popular with women than men which is probably why the other app costs $1.99 as women install and purchase apps more so than men.

thx for the feedback, user payattention
Not sure what you mean by an app clogging up valuable real estate on the home screen.
Why don't you use folders on the home screens?
Or do you have so many apps that 30 folders are full
I do not understand what you mean by if you want an app you will find it yourself. How else would you find an app?
I dont know how apple decide to order the search results.
Probably on popularity. I hope to overtake the paid app quickly.
Yes, I agree. Safari is not the best browser.
Why do you use safari when there are much better alternatives?
Personally I am proud of the web site and see it is an example of how anyone can use wordpress to produce a web site without any knowledge of coding.
Yes, one day I hope to expand to include the second rate op shops in other places in Australia.
And thanks for the suggestion of promoting the app on the web site.
The app is not even 1 day old.
I will. I will.
You say better to promote on the web site. Compared to promoting where?
I am not promoting it here. I just wanted to share my success with my few friends who are dntrade members. I am sorry I have never met you, "pay attention".
I did not know that women install and purchase more apps than men.Thank you for that information. Do you mean in Australia or worldwide?
What is the source?
Yes thank you for pointing out that women frequent op shops more than men.

There is a limited amount of space on the home screen, therefore that space is valuable to not only users but developers as well.

Personally I don't use folders as it puts another step between me and the app I want to use. I don't know if that's typical of other users or not.

This wasn't in reference to your site, it was regarding websites which spam you with "install our app" popups when you visit their home page on a browser. By finding apps I mean to say that if I feel I have a need for a specific app for a website or service, I'll look for it by name in the app store, not because I'm prompted to install it while trying to navigate a website.

Yes, I agree. Safari is not the best browser.
Why do you use safari when there are much better alternatives?

Because it's the default browser which is the same reason most people continue to use it.

I'm not sure where I read it but a quick google shows multiple sources:

i had a simliar conversation with a friend on thursday who is developing apps and has been for a LONG time.

payattention, feedback is great and i am sure honan will take on board the good stuff you mentioned.

what i would like to say is good onya honan for "starting" and having the balls to post about it, cop the negatives and grow from that. I think the idea is GREAT and you have a huge target market.

you may get bought out by Pintrest :D

IMO It's sometimes easier just to create a web version compatible with mobile than an app. Essentially you can achieve the same goal without the same expense. It's only worth it if the App can provide functionality that you can't achieve in a browser.

I installed it and checked it out. I think apps are a great idea and depending on the type of website it's a great upsell to bring clients on board.

I get emails all the time asking how pubs & clubs can get listed on my app. Many users browse the app store and will find you before even knowing anything about the website.

Great work.

One bit of feedback though, I started browsing the listings, and then clicked "Add New" and was given a login error. Wasn't really clear where or how to login.
