You need quality backlinks from quality sites

Anyone selling links or putting your site into link farms etc will get yur butt banned from Google for life.

A big domain that sold recently is using blackhat tactics so that was $10k plus spunked against the wall once Google sees it.

It may take the Big G a week or a year to find it but they WILL find it eventually.

Its none of my business what this person does as they obviously don't care about their investment and I'm too busy to tell them.:D

Actually, the truth is if you're in a ultra competitive niche (e.g. credit cards) you simply won't rank unless you buy links. Do a Google search for 'credit cards' and I can pretty much guarantee that everyone on the front page is buying links.

Yeah I agree with both sides of the argument...but its still not conclusive enough for me :(

I have been reading a few SEO guides on the net as well....majority of them suggest back linking. So isnt buying text links back linking?

Buying text links is one way of many ways to get backlinks, yeah.

I can do more than just 'suggest' getting backlinks to you - if you don't have them, you simply won't rank - it's as simple as that.

Hes Right

However you're not in an ultra competitive area for Aust so do the right things (whitehat) and you'll get there. Quality backlinks will happen if its a good site.

Create a good quality service that people want to use and it will naturally be linked too. If you're in a hurry (need ROI) then you can do things such as guest blog posts on relevant blogs to get 1 way backlinks.

Make sure your onsite SEO is on the money too, using correct HTML tags such as <h1> tags and using mod_rewrite will go a long way as will well structured site map.

Make sure the first few lines on each page are appropriate for getting people to click through from the SERPs page.

Buying links is a very grey area, if you advertise on ninemsn (which a few of the credit card sites do) you are really buying a link.
I believe if google see that most of your links are bought you will get in trouble, if say 1-3% are bought you should be ok.

I tend to say to people, if you are buying links to improve your rankings then it's a bad idea, if you are buying links for other reasons such as you believe it will be good to the sites users then it's ok.

If you are going to pay for anything, buy a review across 10 or so blogs in your niche all at the same time, that way your target market is bound to see your site.

If you want the free route, view all links of your top 10 competitors in google for your keyword, use yahoo site explorer, then get links from as many of the same pages as you can (this can take months). In the end you'll be ranking with the big boys soon enough.

Not all paid links are evil
It is NON-Relevant Paid links that google does not like.

Question What is the most common paid text link that is relevant and is paid for by the linked-to website.

Answer: Google Adsense ads paid for by the advertising website and organised by Google ADWORDS section.

Ask yourself
If a link is to a related content site , how exactly does Google KNOW that the site was paid for the link or not.
However google can soon suspect and discount a link to a totally unrelated site.

Example:
www.MyCARBlog.tld

Links to
MyMatesSite <free link to a friends dealership site
SomeCarDealer < $30 a month paid link
PrettyFlowers < $10 a month Paid link

Google can't tell the difference between the 2 car links
but the floral link is BAD for SEO

For SEO purposes Reciprocal LINKS are also considered WORSE than Paid LINKS
The BEST SEO technique is not to make your site for Search Engines, but for USERS
Google themselves say this several times in their guidelines.

I don't know if comparing paid links for the purpose of SEO and an ad that is displayed via adsense is the best way to demonstrate that paid links are not bad, but yes relevant links are much better than non relevent links.

If I have a very popular personal blog with good PR and trust from google, and on that blog I have 1000 pages (posts) all on a different topic (hey it is a personal blog) then really all that matters is that the content FROM THAT PAGE is relevant to your link.

This is why a link, paid for or otherwise, that is included on one (relevant) page on a site is going to be a safer way to SEO.

Exactly my point.

Like a lot of other oft-repeated assertions about SEO This paid link one has a lot in common with "urban Myths" . Everybody has an opinion.

I'm not sure the floral link is actually bad for SEO. Agree that its value would be heavily discounted though because it isn't relevant.

Also, I don't think reciprocal links are viewed that poorly by Google (ie worse than paid links)?? Certainly in the old days, you could get right to the top with nothing but reciprocal links.

Of course Google realised that people were gaming the system - interlinking purely for SEO rather than merit so they discounted the value pretty heavily.

But do you actually think they are negative overall? IE a site would rank better without them? If you have evidence this is the case, I'd like to know as I have plenty of these types of links to my sites!
