Coming Soon pages

Hey all happy fraiiiiiday!

Ive noticed a few sites with dodgy coming soon pages in generic html and I dont see the point in having a page at all so i thought id give you my story ...

I know a lot of you would have already done this but for the new guys that dont know what to develop id suggest you do this instead of having nothing.

Backpackers.com.au has had woothemes placeholder theme (http://www.woothemes.com/2011/01/placeholder/) on it for a few months now and ive been able to work on SEO which has pushed me to #1-2 for the term "backpackers" in all .au search engines. Installing and customizing this theme took ~10 minutes!

Also this theme has generated 285 email leads using mail chimp (which is integrated in the placeholder theme) and 47 facebook likes ... 47 like without asking for likes from friends - all legit likes straight from the placeholder theme.

Ive also heard great things about http://launchrock.com/ theme but ive yet to test it!

Anyway hope this helps for all of you in need for a coming soon page :D

I prefer to use a plugin over a theme myself. With a plugin you can still see the actual theme you want when you go live and can work away seeing what you really need to see.

A theme will limit that ability afaik.

But it's important to capture what you can, I agree. Using it on a few sites, Jobs Illawarra being one.

Ill give plugins a go on my next project.

Thanks for that link Jono.

You are a font of all knowledge Paul. I have bookmarked so many of your links over time. Thank you. (Not that I've used many yet - ha ha!).

What sort of SEO did you do to get such good rankings for a coming soon page so quickly?

That's great!

Can I ask what sort of conversion rate did that work out to be for email subscribers?

Purely backlinking, the site was once owned by VIPbackpackers.com who did some of their own backlinking. When my guy started his work he managed to get it from page 2 to rank ~1.

The site averages ~1500 views per month and averages ~40 subscriptions per month. Works out to be 2.66% of visitors subscribe. Im not too sure if thats a terrible or decent conversion rate as its the first time i've done anything like this :p.

But still its better than nothing!

i wouldn't worry about your subscription % until the site is live, the fact that you have some means the live site will well received, well done.

why on earth did VIP let it go ?

Ah they let it lapse, it was then picked up by another domainer who then sold it to me.

I guess back in the day VIPbackpackers thought they didnt need it

i bet they are kicking themselves now as they are a very popular chain of backpackers and they have great marketing, their VIP card is a KILLER, i was in airlie beach and i bought the VIP discount card, then booked an island day sail and all up saved $10, at the time i was going to airlie 6 times a year so it saved me hundreds of dollars each year.

that could be a great idea for you, backpackers pay $20 for a card and all you need do is get the discounts sorted.

you have the priority domain there so i think you will do well, once i have my version up and running we'll have to think about some cross over marketing, i'll handle the seedy side of the business with my backpackers.xxx ( hand reg ! )

Good to hear. I can't speak highly enough about the value of coming soon subscription pages on premium domains.

Even if you don't end up developing the name, the mailing list can only add to value.. especially when you get 2-5 sign ups a day ;)
