SEO Challenge

Not to hijack your challenge neddy, but I'd love to see this done as a proper competition. We could pick a real tail keyword in a very uncompetitive vertical, set a few basic rules (maybe no keywords in domain names) and see which of us can take the top spot. I'd be much more keen for that kind of challenge!

Feel free to set something up like this if you want to johnsee. :)

I'm just trying new things to make DNT a hub for Aussie owners and providers.

The purpose of my challenge was simply to find an SEO expert who would:

1. Try and get my site ranking for 3 different keywords.

2. Demystify the process for a lot of people on here (not you expert guys!) by having regular updates .

Then, if everything worked out well, I'm sure there would be more SEO business done between members - us ordinary mere mortals, and you exalted experts. ;)

OK - Let's get started.

OK getting started

I know the idea is to try to share info here.
so before I start

DISCLAIMER

  • This has nothing to do with EGO or with "pitching" any service.
The idea is to learn together.

  • Any SEO guy does things different... like frying an egg... even if the process is similar each person does it "in a unique way".
  • I'm one guy. Not a company and YOU BET I make mistakes, but I want to make the mistakes in front of you and open this Challenge as a discussion... so you can help, get involved and get something from it. (If after the end of the challenge you learned something, you can donate $10 to sponsor the school materials of one of my sponsored kids in Fiji ;)

THE SEO PROCESS WEEK 1

http://vzaar.com/videos/898597

The 1st thing I did with Ned site was to analyze the site a bit and if you see the video below... I decided to tweak this week

You can see the video here:
http://vzaar.com/videos/898597

1) the content a bit
2) improve internal navigation
3) Add some plugins in Wordpress that will make my life easier

What type of SEO am I doing this week?

Not a lot, just plain
social bookmarking
and boring directory submission.

The directory Submission doesn't carry a lot of weight... to be honest, but I want to get it done "soonish" before late, manly because I have no "control" over directory submission... so I want to get it done now so then I have time to do other type of link building.

The social bookmarking is mainly to get Google crawling the site more frequently

Now what about my research?

I did some research via Market Samurai, and surprise surprise... it's a B*tch of an industry, very competitive clearly but I want to share with you how I do keyword research (in a fast way) ... and what did I find interesting in the research

You can see my 2nd video here:
http://vzaar.com/videos/898645

Please keep in mind the videos take 12 minutes and I'm not George Lucas ;)

I will keep you updated.

Brilliant! I can tell already I'm going to learn a lot. Can I ask, would you recommend using All in one SEO pack over the SEO options included in a theme like Studiopress Genesis?

Thanks.

Not trying to hi-jack the thread. Just wanted to put another vote in for 'Yoast SEO'. A great plugin with a lot of additional features over All In One SEO.

Hey Gab - I just wanted to thank you on a couple of fronts. :)

1. The information and knowledge that you are sharing with DNT is fantastic. And by video too! The Market Samurai walk through was great.

2. You have already achieved excellent results for the exact match term "superannuation guide" - it was Page 13 before you started - and is now on Page 3.

And this thread is popular - it has already had over 600 views.

Cheers, Ned

Wed 11th. Talking about Content.

So I just being notified that the content I ordered for the link building it's ready.

Great. So what did I order?

Because this is the first stage I have
10 x 400 word articles
and 5 x 600 articles

The 400 word articles are going to be sent to 3 article directories

GoArticles.com, IdeaMarketers.com and ArticleBase.com

You may wonder: Why not Enzine Article?

The answer is: I can't be bother to wait.

I know, I'm lazy.... guess what many SEO guys ARE lazy. (like domain name brokers? :D )

So why Goarticles?
Goarticles is cr*p but autoblogs love Goarticles and the same deal with ArticleBase, so I hope the articles will get scrapped by autoblogs and in that way it will be distributing the link.

Articlebase is a nofollow link... and that's actually good. I want some nofollow links in my collection.

Does this means that you should only use these articles directories?
Hell no....
use any directories you want. The main point is.... just do it.
Discussing what type of article directory is more effective... makes no point.

The reality is: ARTICLE MARKETING DOESN'T MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE
and you could talk/discuss/argue here that article marketing is dead, etc, etc...

Is it dead?
I can't care less.....

A link is a link.
and at the moment this site has NO links, so these articles will give me contextual links and that's all I want.

So what about the QUALITY?

Well. The Quality of the articles is not "AMAZING"
These are cheap writers, creating cheap content.

If you are a financial writer and find these articles I bet you will puke.
and again....
I can't care less....

The main point of Article Marketing in 2012 is not to engage the reader, it's to get the link.

Sad? Not very "ethical" ? Not very educational?
You bet.

So what about the 600 word articles?

These are going to go to some squidoo lense, hubpages or infobarrel.

Because I'm going to protect my own accounts.... I will PAY someone with an account to publish them in their hubpages or squidoo account, instead of mine(s), mainly to avoid giving away my hubs with all my customers links etc.

Once these links are there, the job will be to do a light bookmarking of the articles to make google notice them a bit more.

So: Will this make a huge difference Gab?
When you are ranking nowhere... even if you scratch your nose, makes a difference. :D

To early to tell....

Stay tuned.

Food for Though - Warning Gab's Pitch
Creating 15 crappy articles costs $30 US
$30 pays for 12 months of pencils, paper and pens for 3 kids in Fiji to be able to do their homework and study better.

Pretty ironic, don't you think?

At the end of this SEO Challenge, I will be publishing a report . It will be FREE but you could buy it (donate) $10.
If you buy it, you get YOUR link in SEOforKids, your name published in Internet Ninja and I give one pack with your Name to one of the Kids in Fiji in my next trip in March.

Hi Gab and SEO experts, I have a novice question to ask...

Are the strategies shown here so far safe to use for a 'branded' site? What I mean is that Ned's site is a domainer's site and if it were to get slapped by Google for any reason it would certainly have negative consequences but maybe not as far-reaching as they might be for a company's branded website that employs 200 staff?

For example, would you recommend article submissions, buying keyword domains, publishing relevant content and pushing traffic to the main branded website?

I have done SEO for "brands" and yes you can apply the same thing to any reputable site....at the end we are not doing anything "greyhat" (not yet!)

I will go later on in a next video on things that can get you in "trouble" and explain why.

cheers

Gab

* I would avoid "article marketing" for a big brand, I will replace it with Press Release and Guest posting.

Academic Update.

Some of you asked me via email, how to do competition research.... by analyzing competitors links.

So, here we go boys...
Enjoy
http://vzaar.tv/899102

Love the videos some good information in them for people new to SEO,

But after a very very quick look at the back link profiles for unclaimed super it is not just the mothers day link which is authority for this specific website they have a lot of natural links from Government sites for example...

http://ministers.treasury.gov.au/Di...13.htm&pageID=003&min=hlc&Year=2002&DocType=0

http://www.lsc.sa.gov.au/organisation_search.php?letter=!

http://www.sro.vic.gov.au/sro/SROna...0442060-CEC76977DF7EF759CA2575EE0009A730?open

http://www.lsc.sa.gov.au/organisation_search.php?letter=A

and so forth...sure these pages are not high authority yet they still hold some weight. This site seems to get a bit of news PR from authority sites, problem with yahoo api (expired) & tools which run off it + SEO spyglass is that they do not index that deep also fresh links take a while to show, but they are still great =)

Another note too is with sponsorship's you need to be careful in that area, especially reaching out to have anchors changes, if company you working for is not currently sponsoring the event and it is an old link I have seen instances in the past where sites even take it down. A funny one was we attempted to change a PR7 anchor and the webmaster said "We will send you our rate card" hehe =) But then you have some fantastic webmasters who will go out of their way, so first advise is too look into the sponsorship.

Also I noticed you dropped the www on the domain you could do some link refurbishment on old links which have been built to this domain on forum signatures too could be an easy one.

Keep the great work coming in =)

Kind Regards,

James Norquay

thanks James
you are 100% right.
It was mainly to show how to use a tool to analyze backlinks. SPyGlass is not 100% there....

thanks for all the valid points, you are one of the true Jedi Masters out there. love your work.
Cheers
