"7" Figure Sale

I was reading about the sale of DUDU.com on SEDO for a cool $1 Million.

The story is here on "The Domains": http://www.thedomains.com/2012/01/0...oving-once-again-you-have-to-know-your-buyer/

Some excerpts:

DUDU is a popular social network which uses unique translation technology to allow its users from around the world to communicate with each other in their native languages.

The network is currently located at godudu.com, and the company decided that investing in a shorter, more memorable name would benefit their business’ growth.

Yes this is the only person/company that would have paid $1 Million dollars for this domain, but so what.

I can just imagine the board meeting,

What should we name this company?
How about "DUDU"?
Ok, is dudu.com available?
Not sure. The website can be godudu.com though.
Ok, good idea, register godudu.com and get Britney Spears to sing at the DUDU launch party.
What does she charge.
I don't know but offer her 1million United States dollars.

.......2 weeks later

I was speaking to a friend who knows a lot about the Internet.
Yes
He said that the web address of Dudu should match the name of the site
Really??!!
Yes, he said if the site is called DUDU, the web address should be DUDU.com rather than GODUDU.com.
Ok, We must buy DUDU.com!
How much should we offer?
How about $10 million United States dollars!
Maybe we can get it for even less!
Yes! Offer $1million United States dollars!
Great, we've made a wise decision here

Do you think that's what happened with Hba .....oops Bupa

BUPA sounds like an internet start up. Not a fan of the name change personally.

No idea what their logic actually was, but it was incredibly stupid however they came to the conclusion of paying a million dollars for the name. This is the kind of company that has a slim chance of surviving long term in my view.

It's an acronym of British United Provident Association. They acquired HBA & MBF during the last few years.

That's fair enough then, at least they didn't pluck the name out of utter randomness.

But in saying that, if it is an acronym, shouldn't it be all capitals?

That would be an initialism. Generally acronyms are pronounceable and written as a normal word.

There are a million different arguments with acronyms, abbreviations and initialisms though! :)

I agree, that adopting the name BUPA wasn't particularly a good idea, considering everyone already knew HBA, all of the years of marketing and brand recognition down the toilet.....anyhow I'm not in marketing, what would I know..

I've only been aware of Bupa for 5 years or so, but I've never heard of HBA before.

See we have MBF in QLD and I only heard about Bupa a couple of months ago when they rebranded the local office in our shopping center from MBF to Bupa.

BUPA is a better known brand globally while HBA was really only known in Vic, MC in SA and MBF in NSW/QLD. From my own experience, it caused a lot of customer confusion. Long term it's probably a good change to put all 3 under the 1 parent brand.

Exactly
BUPA Is a MAJOR Player in Healthcare. Nursing homes, Retirement villages and Home Nursing services here in Aussie already besides a Couple Health Insurance funds.
All of these dnTRADERS who had never heard of BUPA should have googled them or need to get out & about more.

Younger people having babies cost funds more than old people believe it or not!

I was referring to the 'Nursing homes, Retirement villages and Home Nursing services' comment, but point well made.

We have an 18month old, but don't have private health insurance so that's probably why I haven't paid attention to the different funds.
