That was probably Big Buys you were hearing about. this one has been in the pipeline for a while and no real surprises.

If you have some spare time take a look at http://www.savingstips.com.au/retail-war/

Gerrys finally woken up. Some of my favourites from Gerry over the last few years:

- “You’re UnAustralian” to shop online overseas – Gerry Harvey 2010
- “Online retailing is a dead-end: Gerry Harvey.” – Gerry Harvey 2008
- “I’ve got an online part of my business, but I definitely would not put more into it. That’d be a recipe for a disaster.” – Gerry Harvey 2008

And of course his on and off again battle with Ruslan Kogan.

He's certainly said some stupid things, but in his defence at least he has now seen the light.

The only thing worse than having stupid opinions is being too stubborn to change them when you realise how stupid they were!

In the end of the day Gerry is still making big money with offline retail he has been a category leader for many years, sure the likes of Kogan and Appliances Online are on the come up but in the end of the day he is still worth close to 1 billion.

Another interesting fact is that most of the work for Harvey Norman is done in house, most of the advertising and media buys too. But yeah I also think he is trying to work the media with his comments, just as Kogan does to gain free PR, rather than pay for it.

He knows online is booming!!!

That's it. All these people can sit back and criticise Gerry, but at the end of the day he's the one who built a billion dollar fortune from scratch.

It's very hard to knock that.

I was just thinking...

Gerry has been getting plenty of free publicity for a few years now about his stance on online retailing, and given his (apparently) negative attitude, it's hardly surprising to see that the eventual launch of his online store is generating a heap of extra free publicity for Harvey Norman and their website.

Would old Gerry have been cunning and smart enough to let this build up over a few years, all the while knowing that he would launch a website with all this free publicity?

Look at us for example. We're all talking about it and have probably all looked at the site. How many other forums and groups is this being replicated across? Would it have even received a mention if it was any other retailer launching an online store?

Maybe Gerry is smarter that y'all think! ;)

A few comments. Firstly I work at Harvey Norman so am talking from the perspective of an employer I guess.

The one great thing about this online store is that all of HN's prices have been changed and put inline with the likes of JB etc. The reason they had to do this is that no one would buy online if they weren't. Instore this isn't an issue as we tell you the best price we can do and do our best to beat other store's prices. What I reckon is good about all this is that HN is now great value on paper and you actually get good service. For you tech guys out there, yes the service may not meet all your needs, aka the salesman won't know everything you need, but it's better than walking into JB and getting a great price but not having anyone bother helping you.

So, in essence this is a great move by Gerry Harvey though it is a little late. Also, from a quick look the delivery charges are very cheap. $6.95 for delivering a laptop isn't too bad at all.

at JB Hi Fi....It is hit of miss i remember going in looking for a CD and I asked this girl with like pink and green hair who was working their where something was she was like "I dunno over their some where...", im like ahhh can you be more accurate, then she is like "I dunno" and like walks off....

You get that shitty service a lot in the CBD one, but then I remember I was at this Miranda one and the service seems to be 100x better...

Yah, that's pretty true. Some people are legitimately helpful and know what they're talking about while others have no clue.

I worked at JB HIFI for a number of years, and I can tell you that a lot of the staff and customers we got there say the exact same thing about HN lol. For example, every single time I've been into a HN (which is quite a few), I don't think I have ever once been served. But it does totally depend on the staff member you get....some don't give a shit and just plain hate their jobs, but some legitimately try to help as best they can (like me :p)

Of course, there is going to be an extent to the knowledge a salesman can provide, but if you're one of those customers that seems to know everything about everything, then maybe you shouldn't be there asking the salesman to begin with. It's as if they have nothing better to do than harass salesman with ridiculous questions which they know they won't be able to answer - ego big enough mate? lol...

Anyway...

I'm also reading on the net that a lot of people are complaining about the HN site, about it being on Magento and fairly boring. Apparently Magento isn't even good enough for some people, and even though the site checks all the right boxes, THAT still isn't good enough either. I realise it's a large company and it should be extraordinary, but really....I think society simply expects too much these days... If it works, just be happy!!

I definitely agree webfunk. It's a hit an miss situation with any store. Some you'll find you're helped a lot whilst others you'll find that no one cares etc.
