Geo Domains query

I'm just interested as to how people compare values of Australian Geo domain names?

When I say compare values, I mean what in your opinion would hold better value in Australia - a .com or a .com.au for a city or town name?

And is there a difference if we're talking an iconic city like Sydney versus a regional town like Kalgoorlie?

To my mind, Sydney.com would be far more valuable than Sydney.com.au.

However, I would think Kalgoorlie.com.au would be more valuable than Kalgoorlie.com. The same with say Bendigo.com.au vs Bendigo.com

What do you all think?

Basically when you see a country or large city it is advertised with a .com (worldwide recognition)

but for local purposes i would want the .com.au

sydney verses kalgoorlie

just ask yourself how many americans have heard of kalgoorlie compared to sydney and what extensioin they are likely to type in

I always feel for 'worldwide' .com is still king

I've often wondered about that myself.
When I purchased the dotcom in the late nineties for Glen Waverley, the dotcom.au was not available from AUDA.org.au.
I believed at the time the dotcom was universal, and didn't worry too much about missing out. I haven't changed my mind after all these years.
Dotcom is definitely "king".

Ned, I reckon the .com.au is more valuable these days. The .com in the big names is as valuable, like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane as they are easily brandable to an International audience, but even then, most folk overseas know about .au

One name that bucks that trend would be Australia.com (and another interesting question might be Australia.com.au, how many type ins does that get and is this a good look for Australia? Surely it should be redirected to Tourism Australia)

Smaller stuff I really think people trust the .com.au especially when it's local searches.

Another thing worth mentioning is GoldCoast.com Melbourne.com Brisbane.com are all places in America too. Can mix it up a bit again.

Thanks Ben for your input.

So you would put Sydney.com.au ahead of Sydney.com in value?

And what about extensions of the name? e.g. SydneyHotels.com sold for $100k from memory - would you put a similar / lesser / higher value than that on SydneyHotels.com.au?

Yeah I reckon the Sydney.com value would be very similar, for me the .com.au especially looking ahead with .gtld and also .au becoming even more popular.

SydneyHotels.com seemed very high even at that time but the .au value would be similar. I know what Australians will click on first in the search results and what % of the tourism market they represent. I'm sure the International audience knows what .au means when they click around looking for a holiday, consciously, or subconsciously.

As we all know it's up to the buyer to determine price. I think that has been changing towards the .au now for a few years and will continue.

Lots of Aussie domainers only want com.au when they are buying, which is always interesting. I value .com more than others it would appear.

Thanks Ben, for pointing out http://Australia.com.au
What is the story behind that?

I'd agree with most of the others that .com would be great for the big cities, but definitely com.au for the lesser known towns and cities.

Taking the Sydney example, I would much rather sydney.com over sydney.com.au.

In terms of rankings, I own dozens of geo domains in all sorts of extensions including com.au, net.au, com, net, org and even info! I find they all rank fairly similarly, with the exception of .info and especially net.au. That could have more to do with the sites than the extensions, but that's my experience.

I guess what matters is the audience you are targeting. If you really want to hit a global market rather than a local one, then .com would be the way to go.

Looking at GAKT gives you an idea:

'Glen Waverley' gets 3,600 exacts all from within Australia so the com.au would be the most valuable domain

'sydney' gets 246,000 exacts but only 60,000 local so the .com would be more valuable.

Ok - I'm a dog with a bone here. Have a look at these stats from GAKT, and then please tell me which you think is more valuable (if you were looking to buy or sell).

Keyword Global Local
[bowral] 5400 4400 (I would have thought .au would be better?)
[hobart] 60500 9900
[merimbula] 8100 6600 (I would have thought .au would be better?)
[byron bay] 49500 27100
[kalgoorlie] 12100 8100 (I would have thought .au would be better?)
[stradbroke island] 8100 8100

Don't you have to subtract Local from Global to see to see the figure for not Australian ?
The global Hobart searches are probably looking for something other than the capital of Tas

I think the numbers speak for themselves. The more widely known areas of Hobart and Byron Bay feature the biggest increases from local to global.

However, I still think I'd prefer the com.au version for those two.

To add my 2c here. Wouldn't the value of the traffic be in the conversion or monetisation of the traffic for the domain? Therefore the future purchaser would want to purchase a domain with traffic more suited to the product for sale or monetisations strategy.

Just because you have access to world wide traffic doesn't mean that you can convert a local product. Sydneyhotels.com I agree, you would be able to increase revenues from owning the .com and I think this would rank as well in the Aussie SERPs. However the extra 1k of traffic from bowral would struggle to convert (I could be wrong but would depend on the site strategy and product offering).

Therefore the value of the domain should be based on the converting traffic & the type of monetisation methods that the domain could generate. If this is only Aussie traffic then there shouldn't be much difference in the end price.

...

Anyone know the answer?

So
[stradbroke island] 8100 8100 is actually zero global and 8100 local

Is that right?

That's really interesting that you say that One. I guess it also depends on the price people are asking for the different extensions.

Just for discussion sake, let me assume some sale prices for these .com.au domains. Regardless of whether you agree with these price assessments, can you then price what the .com would or should sell for as a percentage. e.g. 25% more? 25% less? Same? Let's also assume you're mostly catering for local consumption.

Bowral.com.au - $8500
Merimbula.com.au - $15,000
Kalgoorlie.com.au - $15,000
Hobart.com.au - $35,000

Don't you have to subtract Local from Global to see to see the figure for not Australian ?

Good question Joe - don't know the answer.
