What's new

Google indexing...

Hey all, I'm not sure if my site laptop-computers.com.au is excluded from the Google Index or if it just hasn't been crawled yet?

It's only been up for about a week but the other sites I have done previously were indexed pretty much the next day.

I've done a site:laptop-computers.com.au check which returned nothing but I noticed it appeared in bing for a product review on what looked to be a cache from the previous owners site.

This was a hand reg so maybe the previous owner let it drop because it was excluded from the google index?

Any tips for a complete novice on what to do? Thanks.

Have you created many inbound links, added to Webmaster Tools etc?

There are plenty of creative ways to get indexed quickly. A simple one I sometimes use is to create an article on a site like hubpages.com that gets crawled heavily. That's helped me get sites into the index within a few hours before.

Thanks guys, I haven't done any link-building yet. I was naively just expecting it to appear like my other attempts. I have added it to webmasters though.

Thanks for the tip FPR. I'll give that a shot and start working on some links.

Doesn't look like the previous owner was doing anything suss so I wouldn't worry about that. Google's just a bit random sometimes and they should find it soon enough with or without links (links will help, of course). I once had a bunch of names indexed minutes after I'd added them to the server but before I could get any content on them - they were all cached as "Index of /" :D

The only problem I can notice is the old owner has taken most of his content from www.associatedcontent.com for some reason. I mean it was only a very small site so it should not have been a huge problem. Also links built in the past were from random domain TLDs but in small numbers.

I would take the advice above, add to webmaster tools and wait it out a few weeks, if nothing happens in 5 weeks and you have good unique content, good links and keep up good work then you need to worry.

also on other notes:

1. add meta description
2. XML sitemap is not working http://www.laptop-computers.com.au/sitemap.xml
3. more links!!!!

Thanks guys, very useful stuff to know. I'm a bit embarrassed to ask but since the only stupid question is the one not asked i'll ask any way - how were you able to see the previous site and inbound links etc? I used wayback machine but that didn't give me much to go by.

A simple way to do it is just to type the domain into Google, Yahoo and look at the link profile. You can also use a bunch of other tools to check link profiles some you have to pay for some are free.

It's been more than a month since Ash posted this and it looks like his site still isn't indexed. I'd be concerned by that.

I've been getting back into development over the last week after a bit of a hiatus and found doing the following has got my new sites indexed within 6-12 hours. I haven't isolated any of the steps so it could be one or the other that's doing the biz:

* Add to webmaster tools
* Add analytics & adsense
* Create a twitter account, follow a bunch of other accounts and tweet something like "oh yeh, new blue widget site in tha house - bluewidgetsite.com.au #blue #widget #widgets #bluewidgets"

I've never been too bothered with forcing the issue on indexing, never had to wait too long for it to happen, but I was bored over the weekend and watching my new sites like a hawk. I'm pretty confident these steps did the trick as I was going about it 1x1, and sure enough each site got indexed shortly afterwards.

Ash, I can't see anything that would prevent your site from being indexed but I thought it a bit odd you're nofollowing the links to your homepage. This *shouldn't* affect indexation but I can't see any benefit to it and would remove the nofollows.

Why do you think adding adsense to the website is a good idea, sorry if I was trying to get a site re indexed I would not put any advertising on it at all...

I didn't say it was a good or bad idea, just an idea - one more signal to say "hey google, i'm over here".

Besides that, do you have any evidence that it's a bad idea?

Umm if you place adsense higher above the fold on the website when it is new it will in turn generate a higher bounce rate for users, not exactly the best signal to be communicating for a new website which you are tyring to get into the market.

Their are 100s of other ways to get sites re included in the index, adding ads to a site not currently in the index is not something I would advise from my experience.

also SEOmoz have thrown it around as a negative signal a few times too: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/googles-negative-ranking-factors-whiteboard-friday

I get what you are saying but that it is something which may cause them to say hey look here, but really I do not think it is the best idea, it could also cause them to say hey why do we want this site back in the index it is just MFA driven.

I didn't realise this was a re-index.

Agree with James, remove ads and submit reinclusion request in webmaster tools.

Another thing I would do is this:

In 2009 when the old site was live it was running on the domain:

www.laptop-computers.com.au

Now the website is running off the non-www version

http://laptop-computers.com.au/

I would change the domain back to the www version,

Also take on above advice and see what happens.

Thanks for substantiating your opinion. I should clarify I don't believe adding adsense alone will get any site indexed or reindexed, just that it was part of the process I was following. I think it much more likely that the twitter link or WMT verification was responsible for my new sites getting indexed. Either way it's food for thought and you've raised some interesting points.

You're not wrong but I'd argue that neither visitors nor bounce rate have a thing to do with indexation. It *might* play some role in ranking but even that's spurious.

Their are 100s of other ways to get sites re included in the index, adding ads to a site not currently in the index is not something I would advise from my experience.

I'm not sure I've ever had a problem getting a fresh site with ads indexed, but as you're focussing on reinclusion I'd be inclined to agree that IF you have to rely on manual inspection then it's probably best to remove ads, tidy up the design and look like a legit resource. Algorithmically I don't think it would make any difference but then I don't have much experience with reinclusion requests.

Thanks guys, I have some work to do. Will post back once I've tidied the site up.

Thanks for reinvigorating this discussion Joe - I've learned a lot.

Last week I had a problem with a domain I was selling. I got an email from the potential buyer which said "the domain isn't indexed; is it banned from Google?"

That put me into sheer panic! It was a domain I bought on the drops last year and it was parked with Fabulous. I had never paid it any other attention.

So I called Drop, and they said this happens sometimes. They offered to assist by bringing it to the attention of their Google rep. :)

But I remembered that I had previously posted on here about "Google Fetch", so I submitted the name through there that evening. I also put a signature link on DNT etc.

I kept checking, and next morning at about 11am the domain was indexed!

Call it luck or whatever, but something worked. ;) My sale went through.

This is the Google Webmaster article (scroll down to submit URLs to Google without verifying).
