Brisbane-River.com

Someone else has the AU, no idea why they wouldn't have grabbed the dot com as well. Being a Brisbane local who loves the water, I shouldn't have much trouble filling it with content, and with more and more activities happening on the river, hopefully there will be a chance of some affiliate sales.

More likely, the domain will sit around for the next 12 + months before I finally do something with it!

Yes this is one of those examples where the .au is more vaulable than the .com. People outside of Australia aren't going to be searching for 'brisbane river' I guess.

However if it's an area of interest for you personally then that makes a big difference in terms of dev potential

I have a few geo domains, and a couple of my .net sites rank better than their .com.au equivelant. And in some cases, I'd say my .com.au competitors are better sites than mine!

On the subject of registering the .com to match your .com.au, a few years back a mate of mine registered a .com which matched .com.au of a relatively well known Australian company. His standard policy was to set up catch-all email accounts for each of his domains (a recipe for spam if you ask me!). Anyway, he received HEAPS of emails directed at the real company, where the sender had just left of the .au from the email address. He also received plenty of type-in traffic.

So yeah, I'd say registering the .com (if you can get it) is massively important if setting up a .com.au site!

Here are a few domains I registered back in July:

copiertoner.com.au
climbingshoes.com.au
surfforecast.com.au
longrangeweatherforecast.com.au
electricbbq.com.au
electricdrumkit.com.au
displayfridges.com.au

Thoughts?

I'm liking the electric ones. copiertoner good too. Unsure about the rest.
When you say "like" and "good" what do you mean by that?

As for the forecast based ones they just had way too much search volume for me not to grab. My background is SEO and monetising websites, so I come from the perspective if it's got search volume, I can get it to rank and then monetise that site even if the domain itself isn't THAT valuable from a resale sense. Plus I'm a surfer, so I won't lie there was a bit of sentimentality in the surf forecast domain.

Here are a couple more I registered awhile ago:

earnmoneyfromhome.com.au
savingsinterestrates.com.au
cheapflightstoeurope.com.au
stainlesssteelfridge.com.au
flightstonewzealand.com.au
newreleasedvd.com.au
searchengineslist.com.au

Thoughts?

Hand registered TowerDefence.com.au and CastleDefence.com.au this arvo. Not bad considering they're a popular genre of games.

Also picked up PortableWiFi.com.au today. No real local volume but the mifi devices are getting to be pretty popular in the states and virgin have just launched a similar one here.

Nice thinking. I agree it could be a real growth product.

2 more I've recently picked up are BestAndroidApps.com.au and BestAndroidPhone.com.au

Both keywords didn't really get any searches prior to 2010 and are only starting to pick up more lately. Might see more over the next 1-2 years as peoples contracts expire and they acquire new phones.

Of course, something like BestiPhoneApps.com.au kills both these searches but the 2 android ones are trending upwards which is a good sign.

Anyway, it's still early days for the android platform.
