Remember - if your manually checking results, you definately need to take into account that Google now "personalises" results based on cookies of your past history. Basically need to clear out your cookies or use a proxy or turn off personalisation to get a true accurate reading, otherwise you can THINK you are at the top but are only at the top for YOURSELF - because you have been to your own site so much. Others searching a topic for the first time will see "unpersonalised" results which may be different!
I'm being lazy right now in that I haven't got a link at hand with more info on this, but if anyone wants to know more and can't find it themselves through a google search let me know and i'll post some more links/info!
