i STRUGGLE with this question when with NON web people, wed designer, web marketer, i even come up with " i help people make money from the internet" as an answer

these are all before joining dnt and getting involved in domaining so god knows what i woud call myself now?

the term "web strategist " is being found @ the world right now but i think that is soooooo wanky

It actually took me @ 3 years before my wifes family realised i wasn't a BUM that played on the internet all day as what i do was sooooo outside of what they thought was possible as a business

can't wait to hear other stories

I know what you mean.. My response varies on who who I'm talking to, but my main role is a "Web Application Developer".

Having said that, I also work as a consultant on a day to day basis assisting with web strategy.

Mostly I just say "work with computers" or "work in IT" and go into more detail if they ask :)

I mainly work on IT projects, mostly web so it's a good mix.

i have a degree in photogrpahy from griffith uni QLD, they changed the degree whilst i was was studying ( 1998- 2000 ) and we had to state a "type" of degree eg: commercial photography, art photograpy, journalistic photography or general photography !!! "

what a bullshit idea !!

so anyway i chose commercial as i am a "coca cola kid"

now to my point ! lol

WHAT they did tell us is , " create a story about yourself ( as it was an art uni) and tell it over and over and over again "

I still haven't solved it for what i do now but its good advice.

NO OFFENSE but: "Web Application Developer". is not BBQ conversatiopn opener nor is " work with computers"

THIS IS MY STRUGGLE !

i need something that doesn't sound dicky !!!!! LOL when i met new people

i use to say to the question " what do you do " and my answer was "nothing"

it was much easier that way

None taken Tim.

For specialists, it's easier. I think many of us cover fairly wide areas so it's difficult to nail down a title that explains it all in one line.

I get where you're coming from, it's a good question.

Cheers,
Chris

To What do you do for a living I say
I buy and sell virtual products
They say what's that?
my reply :For example, a virtual product can be a good email address. What's your email address?
They invariably say the wrong address. Usually the address has no @ and the conversation has started.

you're right, the correct answer to the question needs to prompt interest and then a conversation.

i find if i said "website designer" the reply is " my 13yr old nephew does that"

honan "They invariably say the wrong address. Usually the address has no @ and the conversation has started. "

i ask clients " do you have a domain name yet" ? and they YES, john@telstra.com
