general info, note: i was asked this today by another PM so i thought i would post it "again"
if you are new to using freelances here's some tips.
pay it parts, 3rd 3rd 3rd, never pay the last 3rd until you are TOTALLY HAPPY.
pay by an escrow system like elance, keeps them honest.
change passwords before you start and after you finish
establish their daily start and finish times
ask if there are any holidays coming soon before granting a job, some holidays last WEEKS !
establish lunch time, they REALLY like their lunches + they are generally 2-3 hours in HOT parts of countries but then they do work late.
establish response time and make them stick to it, even if it is " i did nothing" as they sometimes just disappear !
DAILY reports are manditory
always have some one else to hand the job over to, NEVER have 1 freelancer.
MAKE SURE you brief is detailedddddddd, this will be YOUR pain if you don't.
stick with a theme system, if they say " i'll build it myself" they dump them, it will just cause you trouble in the long run.
never give a full job to a newbie, try them out first, i often give them small domain jobs of mine so i can sus out the way they work and see their coding, then just bill that into the next client, give them a small 3 page website and ask for it to be done in 2 days so you can see what happens.
i'm sure others can add more to this.
