Strange article... first line is

Australia has a long-running history of sheltering cybersquatters

Then the article goes on to say

We’re not alleging that Boyce or his company have done anything wrong here, by the way — odds are the company dates back to before Twitter itself existed

But by then the damage has been done. The cybersquatting tag has already been made & that's all the casual reader will remember....

What absolute rubbish.

Twitter (the web app) was founded in 2006 by Jack Dorsey while Twitter.com.au was created in March of the same year. Note: Twitter, Inc holds a trademark in Australia for "TWITTER" with a lodgement date: 25-OCT-2007. More than 12 months AFTER the .au was (allegedly) created.

but we’re sure Twitter will be attempting to retrieve the domain name real soon now.

Based on facts (and current policy) I'd make a good sized bet that Twitter (US) has absolutely no right to the .com.au.
