Trade Marking a Domain Name

Hi Guys!

I have this particular domain. Two dictionary key words. (No brand names)
Hypothetically let’s say its CarGuide.com.au

Now if I applied for a Trade Mark for CarGuide.com.au, does that means CarsGuide.com.au wouldnt be able to trade? Or AustralianCarGuide.com.au.

If the above domains can trade, then whats the point of Trade marking a domain?
