my prediction is its going to die , so if you have them sell them to some sucker that's not a dnt member !

I read all the stats and the fancy infographs, use the analytics etcccc but I use the BEST tools in Australia and that is my family and friends !

Generally I agree, and for the domains above, especially the ones with numbers in them, yes, run away.

But .net.au is not going to die, it's ok for developing in some cases, there is always an exception to every rule.

I've heard a few examples of .net.au keyword domains ranking well after being developed.

Actually I bought a developed .net.au wordpress site a while ago that gets over 200 daily visitors from organic search.

And even when the domain is not a keyword, I still think .net.au is OK in other cases.

For example I've registered .net.au for clients when the .com.au name was already taken.

Actually, last year one client got approached by the owner of the .com.au and offered to sell them the name for around $1500 which was reasonable for the one word name, but they declined (even after I told them they should buy it) because they didn't see the value in switching to the .com.au because they told me that everyone already knows us as "example.net.au"

Although in their case all their business is from word of mouth from their 20 years of experience within their very niche industry .... and the domain was not any keyword to do with their industry, so there was no SEO value in the .com.au in any case.

The drawbacks of .net.au are people expect Australian websites to end with .com.au so that can be confusing and annoying.

It's never going to be in the forefront of peoples minds, basically nil type in traffic for .net.au in my experience.

But as with anything, develop a nice site and promote it right and the traffic will come over time.

Might be worth grabbing something like f5 if you had some obscure business scenario in mind like, keyboard refresh, errr. But end users would not get it. You could waste money speculating.

The fact that they still available probably gives some indication of value.

About the worth of a .com.au vs .net.au, it would be interesting see if the value ever increases / decreases if Google stops displaying the domain extension in its results pages?

I've never been a fan of number/letter combination domains, whatever the extension.

Although looking at the list above there may be a couple of micro-niches for development, drawing a long bow into the far realms of possibility.

For example you could imagine the possibility of developing a BMW fan site for z3 enthusiasts...

e.g. register z3.net.au build up a decent BMW z3 site, get some traffic, build a community and then sell it on flippa a few years later

Requires waaaaaaay more work and time than just registering a domain and expecting it will be worth more to someone else one day (which it probably wont be).

Actually probably a better domain if the end goal is to sell as a developed site on flippa is .com

That way reach the much larger global audience of buyers

z3.net.au could also be kind of cool if you actually had a real world business or club that was focussed specifically on Z3's (and assuming you didn't want to get something else like bmwz3.com.au ... which may have it's own issues depending on how BMW treat fan sites that have their acronym in the domain name)

Yes there is a lot of work in building and SEO-ing a site.

Not that I really know the answer... but I don't see why Google would penalize .net.au over .com.au

I think it more depends on creating better unique content that other people like to link to.

One advantage of .net.au when comparing against registering a global .com domain, would be potential better geo-targeting Australian audience in search ranking.

I'm no SEO guru by any means though... there are people who live and breathe this stuff who might know if that statement is true.

You couldn't use Z3 for Australian audience, the searches per month are too low, the traffic would be pointless.

If .net.au doesn't get penalised then SEO for this website would be sweet for a niche website, top 10's content is ordinary and the backlinks would be minimal.

Yes, from your point of view and purposes (i.e. buy, build, flip).

But if you were a specialist Z3 mechanic or enthusiast club. You would have a good chance to rank well, and get therefore attract more customers/members.

It all depends on who you are and what your business purpose is.

From what I can see of it, most commercial enterprises that build a site on "non standard" extension will eventually want to change if they grow to certain size. Actually they probably want to change at any size but the enterprise is small to the extent that $1500 is more valuable than being on a logical domain.

Lots of people make bad decisions in business, doesn't mean the decision was somehow ok just because they did well anyway.

But as with anything, develop a nice site and promote it right and the traffic will come over time.

Great point. I agree that if you have no want for profit, customers and everyone will find you based on the fact they want you specifically, then you can use a .net.au. However if you are starting a website, niche etc. .net.au = a more effort, less clicks. I may be wrong ..
