Secondary Market Domain Auction (ends Friday 5th Feb)

We are pleased to announce our first Secondary Market Domain Auction featuring some 600 + com.au domains. This no reserve auction is exclusive to Drop.com.au -You cannot bid on these domains anywhere else.

Bidding is now open and the auction closes this Friday, 5th February 2010 - Auction final bids by 11.30 AEST (Extended bids until 12.00 AEST.)

Existing Drop Members will automatically have access to the auction. If you want to participate and don’t have drop membership you can purchase Secondary Market Auction Membership for a onetime fee of $9.95 (NB this does not give you access to the expired domain auction).

Some additional information and housekeeping…
• No hidden bids - The current winning bid will be openly displayed during the auction
• Auctions that receive bids in the final 30-seconds will be extended a further 5 minutes, until extended bidding closes at 12.00 AEST.
• Anyone can bid in an extended auction period.
• Bid amounts exclude GST and the Transfer (Change of Registrant) fee.
• It is a condition of participation that “Change of Registrant” must be via Drop.com.au at a discounted cost of $49.95

Good on you putting so many out at no reserve. This should certainly get some sales numbers through which is great. I just hope for your sake that 600 all at once and in such a short period of time isn't too much when there's a relatively small pool of buyers...?

Testing New Estibot

Estibot has had an update with a slick new look and a whole bunch of new tools. They are running a new valuation engine as well and I thought it would be an amusing exercise to run the Secondary Market inventory through the new appraisal tool (www.estibot.com). I’ve attached the result as a tab separated text in a zip archive to this post – just unzip and import or open with excel

At first glance, it’s great that Estibot is valuing CCtld’s higher than USD$50, but I wouldn’t suggest relying on this data, as it appears to be based on US metrics - it makes interesting reading nonetheless.

Andrew, good luck on selling lots, but I don't imagine they'll all sell! What happens to the domains that don't sell? Will you also be rolling out more of your inventory on a regular basis, and will members of Drop be allowed to offer their own domains for auction? Well done though.

Good questions. I'll do my best to answer them.

We'll wait for the results of the auction and make a decision on the domains that don't sell after the event. At this point it's unlikely that they will be listed in another Secondary Market Auction.

Over the next few weeks we plan to hold a weekly Secondary Market Auction with a totally new group of domains each week.

Naturally we are exploring opportunities for our customers to list their domains on both FabulousDomains.com.au and Drop.com.au. Bear with us while we do the prototyping with our own portfolio. We want to make sure we get it right before we start listing third party domains.

Thanks to all that participated in our first secondary market auction. As a prototype for this kind of service we are very pleased with the results - We sold 48 domains and had only one hiccup; that we had to withdraw a domain from our auction because it was not correctly cleared for auction. To help promote full disclosure, the domain lot now has a WITHDRAWN status on our list and we are reviewing internal process so that this error does not occur again.

We’ll be announcing another secondary market auction shortly with all new inventory.
