Possible Scam??

[sorry of this is posted in the wrong subject]

I received an email from "michael-fishbein@buy-domain-hosting.com" wanting to buy a number of .com domains I have that were on Sedo.

Has anyone else had an email from this person / email address??

The research I have done it appears suspicious. Possibly the "reply with the wanted price back and then they want an appraisal done on their own system which costs $xxx amount, ending up with no sale and you giving them money for a dodgy appraisal.

One way to find out Graham - play him along for a bit.

There could be a miniscule chance that he is genuine, so it might be worth it.

If however it is a scam as you suspect, then you can abuse him. ;)

It very well could be

Be very careful as it most likely is. Firstly did you list the names on Sedo recently? Secondly when I was approached in the same way I insisted they paid for the valuation. Funnily enough never heard from them again.

Thanks

Thanks for your replies [Hi Ned!]

I have sent a reply and see what comes back

Billy01 - Yes the domains were recently listed on Sedo so I suspect due to your experience that it is suspect.

When I get the reply for the domain appraisal I will insist they pay for it

I wont post the link but there is lots of discussion about the 'apraisal scam' over at namepros and yes it does quite often target new registrations

I normally reply 'can you pay to get it appraised before making your offer'

Funny i never get a reply when i put the shoe on the other foot

That is a WELL Known Scam and has been operating for years
Countless threads and posts about it on other domain fora and blogs.

............

The appraisal service is PHONY and the offer is BOGUS, they only want you to use the Over-priced appraisal site.

7000 eur. Ok.

Have you had your domain names evaluated in the past? I mean domain
appraisals. Without valuation we cannot be sure in the sale price. It's very
important for me in terms of reselling too. But we must engage a valuation
company with REAL manual service. So I will only accept valuations from
independent sources I and my partners trust.

To avoid mistakes I asked domain experts about reputable appraisal
companies. Please check this blog with suggestions from other sellers and
buyers:
http://www.thenamepros.com/Archive/586420369.htm

Do you sell domain with a web site or just the name?

Domain without content is ok with me. Web site is not necessary.

If, for example, the valuation comes higher you can adjust your asking price
accordingly. It will be fair. I also hope you can give me 12% - 15%
discount.

After you send me the valuation via email (usually it takes 1-2 days to
obtain it) we'll continue our negotiations.

What is your preferred payment method: Escrow.com, International wire
transfer, PayPal.com or something else?

Hope we can come to an agreement fast.

Looking forward to your reply.

I got one of these emails today.

Nothing about the email looks like a genuine enquiry.

Here's the email text:

Hello,

We want to purchase your domain.

Our company is in hosting and domain name business.

Please email us your desired price in USD or euros for the domain name in the subject line.

If you have other names for sale please email us your domains with prices.

Looking forward to doing business with you.

Regards,

Michael Fishbein

If they were in the 'hosting and domain business', surely they wouldn't be using a two hyphen domain: buy-domain-hosting.com

I just sent what will be my last email in an exchange with an Indian chap.

It started as a general domain enquiry and ended with his last email "how can you sell this domain with noone appraisal? I will fix for you"
