Conroy backs away from internet filter

THE federal government has abandoned its long-standing commitment to introduce a national internet filter and will instead ban websites related only to child abuse.

Following years of debate about trying to censor the internet, the Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy, said the government would no longer proceed with ''mandatory filtering legislation''.

They're not going to implement the filter, just use a block list.. talk about doublespeak. The bigger issue now is the data retention policy they want to introduce. I'd speculate that they already do this and just want to make it legal. Even if that doesn't pass, the US is building a mega data centre to collect everything so it really doesn't matter where such things place given the internet is global. Good luck, I'm behind 7 proxies.

I enjoyed Malcolm Turnbull's response:

Stephen Conroy's humiliating backdown on his proposed Internet filter comes after five years of bullying bluster. But don't be fooled. He hasn't turned into a libertarian. His instinct is always to control and dominate. This is the Minister who boasted that he had the power to make telco executives wear red underpants on their heads. The Internet filter has been abandoned only because Conroy has been forced to recognize he cannot get it through the Parliament.

I love Malcolm... if only he wasn't an ex-lawyer and Goldman Sachs partner I'd actually trust him over all other politicians.

Oh well... like they say, we all get the politicians we deserve... given that we are the ones electing them.

are we china? if this becomes law then where will it stop? it was a horrible idea and i'd be careful of what gets passed for the child porn as it could then be used to cover other ground, and i have 2 kids so i don't want child porn available as its disgusting people do that.

the point is they sneak these amendments in and next you know it relates to something else.

Personally I'd rather there was child porn on the internet.

That sounds terrible, I know, but pedophiles, like psychopaths, aren't made, they have faulty brain wiring that just makes them attracted to children... so taking child porn off the internet won't stop them being pedophiles, if anything it will just make them go look elsewhere (maybe for the real thing ), but telling people "we are doing it's for the kid's sake" sure does get people on board with censorship because it's an easy emotional sell (which unfortunately it seems is what political is degenerating into these days)...

...and that's just a slippery slope.

Why not just monitor/infiltrate the child porn sites and work out who the pedophiles are... the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.
