new tld's and forms

Had an interesting thing happen the other day, just for fun i was filling out a form to download some free software and decided to put my email address as: tim@melbourne and the form wouldn't accept it.

tim@mail.melbourne didn't work either.

this presents an interesting situation not unlike Y2K. obviously not at that level but still " is that software .melbourne compliant? "

any thoughts?

Ideally, the software behind the form validation should do a DNS lookup to see if there is either a valid MX record for the domain part of the email address or if the domain resolves. That way, when .melbourne (or even .tim) becomes a valid TLD, then the form will accept the address.
