Interesting. As someone commented "timing is impeccable" - with the new gTLDs coming along, and .music with 8 applicants (inc Google and Amazon), I would be getting a bit twitchy too if I owned Music.com!

Doubt it will result in a record, it is going to be a tricky name to monetize I think. High barriers to entry.

Highly unlikely whoever gets it is going to make a success of the extension in my view. Personally If I owned music.com and .music was up for grabs I'd be pretty happy about that as promotion of the extension is likely to result in a traffic flow to the .com.

I think most .com variant owners of the proposed new gTLD's would be rubbing their hands in glee at the moment. There's potential for mass consumer confusion leading to increased type-in's of the .com and an increase in value of the corresponding .com IMO.

You may be right about the record, however there are quite a few companies in the online music/streaming market, all jostling for an advantage - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_online_music_stores

Yes, agreed about some .com owners looking forward to the .cashgrab I'm sure many gTLDs will be going for, but I'd be a little worried if there was a gTLD with a really strong long term business model.

I'm don't know...my opinion on gTLDs flips day by day!

I know next to nothing about .com domain sales. So my comments are just speculation, but my first thoughts are...

  • Online music sales surpassed physical music sales this year for the first time ever.
  • The online music industry is already a $8.6B industry and still growing at double digit figures annually.
  • There are a number of big, wealthy, online players moving into this area

To me it has all the hallmarks of being a BIG domain sale.

As for whether it will be a record, well online music sales are bigger than online porn revenues so I think it has a reasonable chance that it could be.

$15 million+ for a sustainable competitive advantage in a soon to be $10B+ online music industry. I don't think that's unreasonable...

Especially when you have the likes of Apple, Google, Amazon, etc regularly throwing millions at start ups to try and stay ahead of each other. I don't think it's hard to believe they might also choose to throw a few millions at something like this as a bit of a speculative play. And to be frank if any two of the major parties rock up at the auction it could have the potential to produce a price never seen before in the domaining industry.

Great domain name!

Surely they will need to create some sort of social music download service to rival that of iTunes etc. Huge industry and in the right hands could be very profitable with the type in traffic pretty much wiping out any need for future advertising.

Anyone want to lend me a few million? lol

I think your comments are valid Chris. It's an industry going through massive change...
I actually didn't even read the news article when I made my post, but after reading it and thinking about it some more, I expect this domain might blow all previous domain sales out of the water and break the $20 million mark.

xxx.com would be an example of this, traffic has increased for the .com now there is a .xxx extension

I use YouTube all the time to listen to music. I also use Spotify which is free. It's a pretty saturated market
