Business on the net jumped a massive 32% the 2010/2011 financial year...

According to a summary of the IT Use and Innovation in Australian Business report for 2010-11 published on the ABS site yesterday, Australian businesses received online orders worth $189 billion in the twelve months to 2010-11, a 32% increase on the $143 billion in 2009-10.

Was also thinking about Gina Rinehart the other day (anyone see her on the Australian Story?) and her push to get more 'influence'

She's spending literally hundreds of millions of dollars investing in the media (Fairfax & Ten) but generally in old media - declining media.

Imagine if she spent that type of money on the internet. Buying up websites, even domains... how would that spend stack up if her main aim is to get influence through the media?

Yeah I watched that episode, did you see the one a few weeks back about Clive Parmer too was good.

The only type of sites she would be would be things like AFR and news.com.au imo, I cant see her buying domains unless they were mining related, that been said I have a few nice mining domains ;)

Good article David. Thanks.

This was also covered on SmartCompany today; with some great commentary from Google Australia.

Think local: Google explains how businesses can get a piece of Australia's $189 billion online market

Claire Hatton, head of local business at Google Australia, told SmartCompany the ABS figures showed the opportunity for businesses that came from having an online business.

"Having a website is more important than having a phone now. You need to be there for consumers where they are looking for you, otherwise they will find your competition," she says.

"Whether you're a pizza restaurant or the newsagent around the corner; it's never been more important to be online."

Hatton says it is unclear why many small businesses are not getting online.
