How do you value 3 letter domains?

Title of the thread says it all really.

I've picked up a few random three letter .com.au domains for $1 on Drop. Are these always worth more than the reg fee or is it a bit of a lucky dip?

I think the fact you have gotten them for $1 on Drop kind of answers the question. Do they have letters like X Y Z in them?

There is lots of these available isn't there? So the low quality ones won't be worth anything. For the better quality names it will go on letter quality (premium versus non premium letters), any meaning, corporate usage etc. Would be careful though because even the better sounding names are not really worth anything a lot of the time.

Example: I let hun.com.au drop several months ago, got about $60 on the drop.

General rule of thumb...

Good: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T
So-so: J, K, U, V, W
Not so good: Q, X, Y, Z

Although due to Queensland, "Q" may be slightly better in the .au space.

Values are about the same as a length of string.

Good call re the Q - I'd stick it in your 'Good' pile because of Queensland.

'A' is the best letter for Australian, association etc

Thanks for all the responses. I'm glad to see mine are mainly in the 'good' with some 'so-so' but I get it's a bit of a lucky dip.

I own several 3 character .com.au's and find that unless there is a specific acronym or niche that fits, not much value at all.
Yet my 4 most valuable ones have "x" or "z" in them

FYI I Own 3chr.com, maybe should re-develop it as a Valuation Site.

if you own AUD you value it at $10,000

i guess , car, eat, dog, cat and other word LLL's are the exceptions

starting to wonder if i should keep rod/net/au ?

check out this site -

http://www.3character.com/

good info on these domains, yet more focused to overseas TLD's still decent info.

Note though the data itself has been completely wrong (pretty much everything is way too high and has been since the lll category started declining in 2008). The talk about letter quality etc is worth reading though.
