Big websites like carsales don't go for cheap web hosting.

I must concur with smee. Sites like carsales.com.au? I don't think 'cheap hosting' comes into play here; or shouldn't. I'm rather surprised by the comment actually.
Anyway, that's enough of me being non-helpful; hopefully someone can chime in with some answers for you.

You will not need the same infrastructure as a site like carsales.com.au straight off the bat. It would most likely be split across multiple systems, utilising load balancing, db replication, cdn, and more. It would cost an arm and a leg.

In your case, I assume you'll be fine with a single server to start with or possibly two virtual servers to split the db and web server and then tweak for performance.

If you seriously think you'll need the infrastructure requirements similar to car sales, then go direct to the likes of bulletproof, macquarie telecom or anchor and get a proper solution put in place.

If it is essential to have a "big site" infrastructure set up stop mucking around in a discussion forum and hire a third party consultant who will assess your needs and recommend solutions that take into account where you are at now and where you will be in 12 – 18 months time.
