Holden advert today

what is your opinion on this?

have you seen the new holden advert? it says "we're here, we're here, we're here, we're here, we're here, we're here, but in the future we will not be building cars in Australia, we're here to stay "

ummm, holden ! you're not here anymore ? god I hate ads that make us look like idiots, people with smiley faces, even celebs and sports people in the ad !

its a horrible ad to tell Australia they are moving OS for production of cars even though it is a fact of the future economy its just not well handled IMO

I say this as being one that openly states I use overseas developers but RARELY tell clients that I do, do they need to know?, do they care?

if I was to quote a job would I give 2 quotes: use of Australians $8000, use overseas programmers $4000 , what would they chose ?

its an interesting concept, just look at the bottom of any item you get given this Christmas and it may well say "made in china"

When the reality was that maybe 90% of the holden car was produced in china anyway and just assembled here ?

I feel 2014 is going to be a BIG year of change, a change in thinking of how to do business, you have to go global and use overseas people or get left behind..... I already feel I am years behind and those of you who know... KNOW I am years behind

Personally I do not see why they are making a big deal out of people loosing their jobs in 2017 they are getting HUGE redundancy packages. I have several family members from global companies who are based in Sydney who were made redundant in recent weeks, you hear no mention of their issues.

I guess the biggest issue here is manufacturing is going off shore, so Australia is loosing out on industry in a big way.

I also agree with the ads been annoying, I guess they are trying to spin positive PR, yet I do not think it is the right strategy.

Not sure the workers at the smaller componentry makers will be getting those huge payouts, and it will be difficult for a lot of those workers to get new jobs consider the specialised qualifications and demographic.

It had to happen sometime though..

Sadly I think we'll see more jobs go in 2014. I know one big aussie icon that is currently giving their employees "coping with change" counselling....

I really doubt the redundancy packages are huge. A lot of people in the car industry will have trouble finding another job so I'd say the money isn't going to last. It is bad for them but that industry should have been shut a long time ago.

Australia as a whole isn't really "losing out" on anything. The country will be far better off once the doors are shut on non viable industries that need handouts to survive.

Seems like the world is becoming more global all the time. It is just economics, a bit like the economics of outsourcing IT projects for the cost benefit. This can be said of every industry, if they cannot find a way to be financially viable.

That being said, I think there will always be the need for specialized and localized products and services. I try to stay on the lookout for what may be on the horizon and what is a staple. I find it interesting to watch the trends.

For instance I think it will be a long time before they offshore Plumbing services. It could happen one day if they fly in and fly out plumbers etc. but it will take a long time.

Anyway, I better stop there and get my head down from the cloud a bit.

Holden was never Australian. It's always been mass marketed to Australians who felt patriotic buying it thinking it was aussie owned. They scammed everyone with clever branding and marketing

Most australians would have thought HOLDEN was Australia. Now more BS to keep people believing

Holden ( General Motors USA ) is a manufacturer who generally makes cars an increasing amount of people dont want anymore.

I have one, I like it but I wont buy one again. They are not loyal to Australia so Australia ( and the australian taxpayer) should not be loyal or give them Billions of dollars over the years handouts any more

Just saw the ad. I think it is the kind of marketing they need to do as some people will assume the car they buy today won't be supported in the future, i.e. holden is leaving the country. They'll be losing some degree of sales straight away without marketing like this. Pretty sure Ford ran similar ads not so long ago.

Yeah, I can see why they are doing it, but seems to be poor execution IMO. They are trying to make everyone keep the Holden warm and fuzzies that Aussies have had for so long, going back to the FJ.

Personally I am not sure the advert is having the desired effect. It seems to be constant reminder that our beloved car is going offshore. I think the message of assurance could have been delivered more carefully.

I think sales will drop regardless, but I am sure they can absorb the losses.

Yep, in the game of car manufacturer roulette …………toyota has come out the winner for sure. The government will probably have people on the dole washing the new cars just keep them here

I have no idea what cars Toyota actually make here but if I walked into a dealer and was told the car I was considering was made here I'd be running for the nearest emergency exit. Toyota have a reputation for making high quality Japanese cars.

I don't think Toyota is the winner here, probably they are just the last to abandon ship.

They make the Aurion here. We bought a new one earlier this year and it's been great.

It's a shame that some people have such a low opinion of their own country's abilities.
